The Brazilian women's national volleyball team is a selection of the best Brazilian women who represent the Confederação Brasileira de Voleibol (CBV) in international tournaments and matches. The Brazilians won two Olympic gold medals, were three times vice world champion and collected many titles at the Grand Prix and the South American championship.

history

World Championship

Brazil took part in the 1956 World Cup for the first time and finished eleventh. In 1960 , the team reached fifth place in their own country. Two years later , the Brazilian women finished eighth. In 1967 they missed the finals and in the next two tournaments in 1970 and 1974 they achieved their worst results with 13th and 15th place. At the World Championships 1978 to 1990 they were seventh, eighth, fifth and seventh again. When they hosted again in 1994 , they reached the World Cup final for the first time, which they lost to Cuba . Four years later they just missed the medal ranks in fourth. At the 2002 tournament they did not get past seventh place. In 2006 they were runner-up again after losing a final against Russia . The same pairing took place at the 2010 tournament and the Brazilians lost again. In 2014 in Italy they missed the final and finished third after beating the hosts. They finished the 2018 World Cup in seventh place.

Olympic games

The Brazilians first took part in the Olympic tournament in Moscow in 1980 and finished seventh. They have always been represented since then. At the 1984 Games , they came in seventh again and four years later they came in sixth. In 1992 in Barcelona they were fourth to miss a medal. At the 1996 Games , they won bronze with a win against Russia. In 2000 in Sydney they repeated this success, this time against the USA . Four years later they had to admit defeat to the Cubans in the bronze game. In 2008 in Beijing they defeated the USA in the final and celebrated their first Olympic victory. In 2012 in London they managed to defend their title against the same opponent. At the 2016 tournament in their own country, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals against China . At an international qualifying tournament in Uberlândia , they secured the starting place for the 2020 Olympic Games .

South American Championship

At its premiere in 1951, Brazil won the South American volleyball championship in its own country. After that, the women of the CBV defended the title again in 1956 against Uruguay and then in three finals against Peru . In 1964 in Buenos Aires they were absent for the only time. From 1967 to 1997 the final between Brazil and Peru took place 16 times in a row, with the Brazilians winning in 1969, 1981, 1991, 1995 and 1997. Since winning the title in 1995, they have been unbeaten in South America. From 1999 to 2003 they prevailed in the final against Argentina , then twice against permanent rivals Peru and three more times against Argentina. After beating Peru in the final in 2015, Colombia was the opponent in the final in 2017 and 2019 .

World cup

At the first World Cup in 1973, Brazil finished ninth, after which they were missing. In 1981 and 1985 , they improved to eighth and sixth place before missing the 1989 tournament. In 1991 they were eighth again. In 1995 they lost to Cuba in their first final. Four years later , they took third place. They lost the 2003 final against China as well as the 2007 final against Italy. In 2011 they came in fifth place. As hosts of the following Olympic Games, they did not take part in the 2015 World Cup. In 2019 they lost the game for third place against Russia.

Nations League

In the Nations League 2018 , the Brazilians lost the game for third place against China. At the 2019 tournament they had to admit defeat in the final against the USA in the tiebreaker.

World Grand Prix

In 1993, the Brazilians finished fourth at the premiere of the Volleyball World Grand Prix . In 1994 they won the final against Cuba. After losing a final against the USA in 1995, they succeeded again in 1996 against Cuba. 1997 was the only time they did not take part in this competition. In the following year, Brazil won the final against the Russians, who took revenge in 1999. After a third place in 2000, the Brazilians missed further medals from 2001 to 2003 with places five, four and seven. Then they won five of six editions from 2004 to 2009, only interrupted by fifth place in 2007. From 2010 to 2012, the South Americans then lost three finals against the USA. In 2013 and 2014 they were successful against China and Japan. After finishing third in 2015, they won the last two editions of the competition in the final against the USA and Italy.
