For the men, the ten qualified teams were drawn in two groups with five participants each. The preliminary round was held according to the "everyone against everyone" mode. The two best teams in each group met each other in the semi-finals. The remaining teams played from places five to ten.
For women there were two groups with four participants each. The two best teams in each group met each other in the semi-finals. The remaining teams played from places five to eight.
The games were played in Moscow from July 20 to 31. The venues were the multi-purpose hall "Drushba" and the "Small Arena" in the Luschniki sports park.

In Group A, the Soviet Union remained unbeaten with only one lost set. Bulgaria suffered the only defeat against the hosts. In Group B Poland and Romania were tied at the end. The Romanians lost the direct duel and also had the worse set ratio.

Libya could not win a set in the placement game against Italy and finished last.
In the semifinals on July 30, the USSR defeated the eventual bronze medal winner from Romania, Bulgaria prevailed against Poland. The final between the Soviet team and Bulgaria on July 31 was won by the hosts.
In Group A, the women of the GDR started successfully with a victory against Cuba before they had to admit defeat to the Soviet Union. Another win against Peru was enough to finish second behind the Soviet team and make it to the semi-finals. In Group B, three teams were tied at the end. The better rate ratio decided in favor of the Bulgarians.
In the semifinals on July 27th, after five varied sets, the GDR was able to prevail against Bulgaria, which then took bronze. The opponent of the East German women in the final on July 29 was the Soviet Union. As in the group game, the GDR lost in four sets and won the silver medal.
