Vyacheslav Alexeevich Saizew ( Russian Вячеслав Алексеевич Зайцев ; born November 12, 1952 in Leningrad ) is a former Russian volleyball player .

Career

Vyacheslav Saizev made his debut in the first team of Avtomobilist Leningrad at the age of 16 . With the club he won the Soviet Cup in 1983 and was twice European Cup winners . After 18 years in Leningrad, Saizew moved abroad in 1987 and played for five years at Italian clubs. His last active season was 1992/93 in Switzerland as a player-coach with Pallavolo Lugano .

In 1971 Saizew played his first international match for the Soviet Union . He was twice world champion ( 1978 , 1982 ), twice vice world champion ( 1974 , 1986 ) and between 1971 and 1985 seven times European champion . In 1976 and 1988 he won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Montreal and Seoul . In 1980 he became Olympic champion at the Olympic Games in Moscow .

Saizew's son Ivan Zaytsev is an Italian national volleyball player.
