For the men, all ten qualified teams played in a group according to the “everyone against everyone” mode. The most successful team in this round was Olympic champion, the second best won silver, the third bronze.

For women, eight teams played on the same principle.

The games were played in Mexico City from October 13th to 26th.

Schedule men

The Soviet men lost their opening game against the USA in five sets, but then remained unbeaten and defended their title. In the battle for the silver medal, the set ratio had to decide. Japan lost to Czechoslovakia in the tiebreaker on matchday three, but gave up only six sets in total and therefore finished second. The GDR team was only fourth. The East German men had to admit defeat in the first two games of Czechoslovakia and Japan and then only lost to defending champions Soviet Union (2: 3). Host Mexico did not win.

Schedule women

The decisions were made in the last few games. On the final day of the match there was a direct duel for the gold medal between the previously undefeated teams from the USSR and defending champions Japan. With a 3-1 victory, the Soviet women reached first place and dethroned the Asian women. The battle for bronze was also decided in the last game between Poland and Peru, with the Eastern Europeans having the better end to themselves. The hosts from Mexico were able to secure at least the penultimate place with a success over the US women who did not win in the end.
