Jürgen Freiwald (born September 9, 1940 in Husum ) is a former volleyball player from the GDR .

Freiwald was part of the GDR championship team of SC Leipzig from 1967 and was involved in six titles from 1967 to 1972. With the GDR national team , he finished fourth at the 1968 Olympic Games . In 1969 he won the Volleyball World Cup and the following year he was there when the GDR team won the title at the 1970 World Cup in Bulgaria. Of the world championship team, only Jürgen Kessel and Jürgen Freiwald were no longer part of the GDR's Olympic squad in 1972.

In contrast to his club mates at SC Leipzig, Freiwald did not study sport, but horticulture. After his sporting career, he ran a company for fine frozen vegetables. After the fall of the Wall , Freiwald switched to delivering food to hospitals.
