The 1970 men's volleyball world championship took place in Bulgaria from September 20th to October 2nd . The GDR won the title for the first time and thus ensured the greatest success of a German team to date. The games were played in Sofia , Yambol , Haskovo and Kardzhali .
mode
The 24 participants played in the preliminary round in four groups of six. The two best teams in each group determined the world champion in the final group, with the results of the direct duels being carried over to the final round. The third and fourth group played for positions nine to sixteen, the remaining teams for positions 17 to 24. The new world champion and the second and third placed qualified for the 1972 Olympic Games .

Final round
The GDR team with coach Herbert Jenter and Kapitan Siegfried Schneider defeated the hosts in the last game of the final round and won the only World Cup title for Germany. Moreover played Jürgen Freiwald , Horst Hagen , Jürgen Kessel , Jürgen Maune , Horst Peter , Eckehard Pietzsch , Arnold Schulz , Rudi Schumann , Rainer Tscharke , Wolfgang Webner and Wolfgang way .
