Jürgen Kessel (born September 5, 1937 in Berlin ) is a former volleyball player from the GDR .

Kessel played in the 1960s for SC Dynamo Berlin , with whom he won the GDR championship in 1961 and was second behind SC Leipzig from 1962 to 1971 . After the time at SC Dynamo, he played for SG Rotation Prenzlauer Berg , with which he won the FDGB Cup in 1984, but the sports club teams were not in this competition.

In the GDR national team , the setter completed 155 international matches. From 1966 to 1968, the GDR selection was fourth at the season highlight three times in a row. In 1969 he won the Volleyball World Cup and the following year he was there when the GDR team won the title at the 1970 World Cup in Bulgaria. In the world championship team, Jürgen Kessel was the second oldest player behind his Berlin club mate Wolfgang Webner .

Kessel was a coach at SC Dynamo Berlin until 1990. After the fall of the Berlin Wall , he worked for the post office until he retired in 2002.
