Giuseppe Olivi (born March 18, 1769 in Chioggia , † August 24, 1795 in Padua ) was an Italian naturalist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Olivi ".

Life

Olivi, who was a student of Francesco and Giuseppe Fabris in Chioggia, was interested in a wide variety of scientific questions, chemistry (where he was a follower of Antoine Laurent de Lavoisier ), mineralogy, agriculture, zoology and botany (especially algae). His main work is a description of the animals of the Adriatic in the Venetian lagoon. As a supporter of Albrecht von Haller , he dealt with irritability of body parts and animal electricity. Although he had not taken a vow, he dressed in clerical robes and carried the title of Abate.

For example, the first description of Corbula gibba comes from him .

He was a member of the Turin and Berlin Academy of Sciences and the Accademia dei XL . In 1793 he was also elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

A zoological museum in Chioggia is named after him.
