The 1986 Women's Volleyball World Championship took place in Czechoslovakia from September 2nd to 13th . The Chinese team successfully defended their title. The games were played in Prague , Žilina , Pilsen , Brno , Olomouc and Ostrava .

The sixteen participants played in four groups of four in the first round. The three best teams in each group reached the second round, the remaining teams were placed thirteen to sixteen. The results were taken against the direct competitors. In the second round there were two groups of six. The group winners and runners-up qualified for the semi-finals and the other teams played the other placement games.

qualification
Host Czechoslovakia and the seven best teams from the last World Cup were automatically qualified. These included the defending champions China , the second Peru , the third USA , the fourth Japan , the fifth Cuba , the sixth Soviet Union and the seventh South Korea . The best-placed participants in the current continental championships who were not among the top 7 of the previous World Cup were also seeded. These were the GDR ( Europe ), Canada ( NORCECA ), Brazil ( South America ), North Korea ( Asia ) and Tunisia ( Africa ). The remaining three starting places were awarded at a qualifying tournament in Rome . Eleven teams competed in a group of five and a group of six, of which the best three teams reached a final group. The first three teams in the final group qualified for the World Cup.
