1978 Women's Volleyball World Championship

The 1978 Women's Volleyball World Championship took place in the Soviet Union from August 25th to September 6th . Cuba won the title for the first time. The games were played in Leningrad , Riga , Minsk and Volgograd .

mode

The 23 participants played in the first round in three groups of four and one group of three. The two best teams in each group formed two groups of six in the second round, the remaining teams came in a group of six and a group of five. The results were taken against the direct competitors. Then all ranks were determined in placement games.

qualification

The host Soviet Union and the top twelve teams from the last World Cup were seeded. The other participants qualified because of their good placement at the European championships in 1977 or at the continental championships at NORCECA in South America , Asia and Africa . However, Romania , Argentina and Egypt did not participate and were replaced by the Netherlands , Italy and Finland . There was no replacement for the team from North Korea , who also did not appear.
