qualification

The host Peru as well as the defending champions Cuba and the Soviet Union as Olympic champions in 1980 were set. The other participants who did not come to the world championship as a substitute for the boycotting nations qualified because of their good placement at the European championships in 1981 or at the continental championships at NORCECA , in South America , Asia and Africa .
