Men's volleyball world championship 2014

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2014 men's volleyball world championship took place in Poland from August 30th to September 21st . In addition to the host, 23 other teams took part. Poland beat defending champions Brazil 3-1 in the final and won their second World Cup title after 1974. It was the first victory of a World Cup host since 1966 (then Czechoslovakia ). Germany won the game for third place against France 3-0.

mode

The tournament began with a preliminary round in four groups (A – D) with six teams each. As in the following group matches, the internationally customary point scoring applied: In the event of a 3-0 or 3-1, the winner received three points, the loser received nothing. If the match was 3-2, there were two points for the winner and one for the loser. The four best teams in each group reached the second round, which was held in two groups (E and F) with eight participants each. Results against opponents from the first round have been adopted. The three best teams from each of the two groups reached the third round. There they were divided into two new groups (G and H). The two group winners of the second round were set. The two best teams in these groups qualified for the semi-finals, while the group third played for fifth place overall. The winners of the semi-finals played the final, the losers played for third place.

Video evidence was used for the first time at a world championship . The trainers were able to have the referee's decision checked twice in one sentence with a video challenge . Decisions about net and block contact as well as the question of whether the ball was out were affected. Before the World Cup, the system was tested at the 2012 Club World Cup and the 2013 World League Final .

media

The broadcaster Sportdeutschland.TV, which was operated by the German Olympic Sports Confederation , showed all games of the volleyball World Cup 2014 in Germany as a live stream and on demand on the Internet. Sport1 acquired the license rights for the unencrypted transmission on German free TV of the semifinals between Germany and Poland as well as a possible final with German participation, but due to inconsistencies with the international rights that Sport1 has to comply with due to the unencrypted transmission via satellite, the unencrypted distribution prohibited by the rights holder Polsat. The ZDF , however, limited itself to short reports in the sports and news programs. Polsat broadcast the games in the host's country . World Cup games were broadcast in many other countries.

Venues

The World Cup was held in seven Polish cities. The games took place in Wroclaw , Bydgoszcz , Gdansk , Katowice , Krakow , Łódź and Warsaw . In the capital, the opening game was played in the Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw; the 62,000 tickets were sold within 100 minutes. Other games were played in the Atlas Arena in Łódż, the Ergo Arena on the city limits of Gdansk and Sopot , the Spodek multi-purpose hall in Katowice and the Łuczniczka hall in Bydgoszcz.
