The Cuban men's national volleyball team is a selection of the best Cuban players that the Federación Cubana de Voleibol represents at international tournaments and internationals.

history

World Championship

In the first few appearances in the volleyball world championship , Cuba did not get past places 19 and 17, but after that the Cubans gradually worked their way up. Over the ranks thirteen and eight, they climbed to third place in 1978. After a weaker tournament in 1982 (tenth) and a fifth place in 1986, they reached the 1990 final against Italy . At the next two world championships they finished fourth and third. In 2002 the crash followed in 19th place and also at the 2006 World Cup , Cuba only reached 15th place. At the 2010 World Cup , Cuba surprisingly won the silver medal.

Olympic games

In 1972 in Munich , Cuba's first Olympic tournament ended in tenth place. At the 1976 Games , the Cubans celebrated their greatest success to date by winning the bronze medal. Four years later they finished eighth. When they returned in 1992 , they narrowly missed out on a medal in fourth place. At the tournaments in 1996 and 2000 there were places six and seven.

NORCECA championship

At the first NORCECA championship in 1969, Cuba won the title against hosts Mexico and defended it against the USA two years later in front of their own audience . In 1973 the US team took revenge, but then Cuba triumphed four times in a row. After a third place in 1983 and a final defeat against the USA in 1985, the Cubans achieved six more successes in a row from 1987 to 1997. In 1999 they lost again to the Americans before winning their last continental title in 2001. After that there were two third and one second place.

World cup

After finishing ninth in 1969, the Cubans rose to the medal ranks as third in the World Cup in 1977 . Four years later they reached the final against the Soviet Union . In 1985 they were absent, but in 1989 they won the title for the first time against Italy . The attempt to defend the title ended in the final, in which the Soviets triumphed again. After a weaker tournament in 1995 (sixth), there was the third final defeat against Russia in 1999.

World league

In their first four appearances in the world league , the Cubans lost the final against Italy three times between 1991 and 1994; In 1993 they finished fourth. After a third place in 1995 and fourth place in 1996, they failed again in the final against the southern Europeans in 1997. When the latter only finished fourth a year later, Cuba won the title against Russia. But in 1999 Italy was back in front of Cuba. After that, the Cubans' results got worse. They finished eighth in 2000 and fifth in 2001. In the following two years they did not get past 13th place before they came back to third place above seventh place. In 2006 and 2007, they again took seventh place. In the 2008 competition it was only tenth place. In 2009 and 2010 there was again a significant increase in fourth place. In 2011 they came in eighth.
