1981 European Women's Volleyball Championship

The 1981 European Women's Volleyball Championship took place in Bulgaria from September 19th to 27th . The games were played in Sofia and Pernik . The hosts ended the Soviet Union's winning streak and won the title for the first time.

mode

The twelve participants were divided into three groups of four in the preliminary round. The group winners and runners-up were combined into one group in the final round. In the mode “everyone against everyone” they determined the tournament winner. The remaining teams played for positions seven to twelve. Results from teams that met in the preliminary round were carried over to the final round.

Final round

The GDR reached fourth place with Ramona Landgraf , Heike Lehmann , Silke Schott (all SC Dynamo Berlin), Monika Beu , Ramona Branding , Ute Kostrzewa (SC Leipzig), Andrea Heim , Karla Mügge , Martina Schmidt and Anke Westendorf (all SC Traktor Schwerin), Jeschke, Harms. The trainer was Dieter Grund .

The Federal Republic of Germany took tenth place with Christa Schubert , Sigrid Terstegge , Gudrun Behrens , Gabi Lorenz , Marina Staden , Renate Riek , Silvia Meiertöns , Ruth Holzhausen , Marlis Kerstiens , Regina Vossen , Marion Manke , Regine Bracht and Angela Liebelt .

qualification

Bulgaria was set as the host. The best five teams from the 1979 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as defending champions, the second GDR , the fourth Hungary , the fifth Romania and the sixth Netherlands .

Six other teams made it to the finals through qualifying tournaments that were held in May. In Group A, which played in Rheine , the Federal Republic and Yugoslavia prevailed against Sweden , Norway and Israel . Group B in Rome won Czechoslovakia and Italy against Finland and England . In Group C Poland and Turkey were successful against France , Belgium and Switzerland .
