European women's volleyball championship 1979

The 1979 European Women's Volleyball Championship took place in France from October 5th to 13th . The games were played in Lyon , Orléans , Cannes and Évreux . As two years before, the GDR was only beaten by the Soviet Union , which was European champion for the tenth time.

mode

The twelve participants were divided into three groups of four in the preliminary round. The group winners and runners-up were combined into one group in the final round. In the mode “everyone against everyone” they determined the tournament winner. The remaining teams played for positions seven to twelve. Results from teams that met in the preliminary round were carried over to the final round.

The Federal Republic of Germany played with Heidi Kerstiens , Marlis Kerstiens , Marina Staden , Sigrid Terstegge , Silvia Meiertöns , Maria Leister , Marion Manke , Renate Riek , Elke Sporrer , Susanne Riegel , Marion Appel and Petra Spuck .

qualification

France was set to host. The top five teams from the 1977 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as defending champions, the second GDR , the third Hungary , the fourth Poland and the fifth Czechoslovakia .

Six other teams reached the finals through qualifying tournaments held in April and May. In Group A, hosts Romania and Belgium prevailed against England . The German team also had the home advantage in Group B and qualified together with Yugoslavia ahead of Turkey and Switzerland . In Group C, which played in Almelo , Bulgaria and the Netherlands were successful against Israel and Austria .
