2001 European men's volleyball championship

The 2001 European men's volleyball championship took place in Ostrava from September 8th to 16th . The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia won the title for the first time.

mode

First there was a preliminary round, in which the twelve teams were divided into two groups of six. The two best teams in each group reached the semi-finals. The table third and fourth played for places five to eight.

Germany played with Marco Liefke , Frank Dehne , Vincent Lange , Bogdan Jalowietzki , Ilja Wiederschein , Björn Andrae , Christian Pampel , Norbert Walter , Frank Bachmann , Ralph Bergmann , Mark Siebeck and Michael Mayer .

qualification

The Czech Republic was set as the host. The top five teams from the 1999 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were Italy as the defending champions, the second Russia , the third FR Yugoslavia , the fifth Netherlands and the sixth France .

Sixteen teams played for six more places in May / June 2000 and a year later. The group winners and the two best runners-up of the four groups of four reached the finals.
