European women's volleyball championship 1987

The 1987 European Women's Volleyball Championship took place in Belgium from September 25th to October 3rd . The games were played in Gent , Auderghem / Oudergem and Eupen . The GDR won the title for the second time with a 3-2 win in the final against the Soviet Union.

mode

The twelve participants were divided into two groups of six in the preliminary round. The group winners and runners-up reached the semi-finals. The other teams played for positions five to twelve.

Placement games

The games for places one to four took place in Ghent. The remaining placement games were played in Auderghem / Oudergem.

The Federal Republic of Germany played with Gudrun Witte , Ute Hankers , Sigrid Terstegge , Gudula Staub , Stefani Legall , Susanne Schlarmann , Silke Meyer , Sabine Brücher , Michaela Vosbeck , Alexandra Ludwig , Claudia Wildhardt and Susanne Köster .

The GDR became European champions with Maike Arlt , Monika Beu , Kathleen Bonath , Grit Jensen , Heike Jensen , Susanne Lahme , Kathrin Langschwager , Anke Lindemann , Ute Oldenburg , Ariane Radfan , Steffi Schmidt and Dörte Stüdemann .

qualification

Belgium was set to host. The top three teams from the 1985 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as defending champions, the Second GDR and the Third Netherlands .

Eight other teams reached the finals through qualifying tournaments that took place in May. In Group A, Czechoslovakia and Romania prevailed against Finland and Norway . In Group B, which played in Pazardzhik , hosts Bulgaria and Italy were successful against Switzerland. France , the Federal Republic , Hungary and Poland also qualified .
