The tournament began with a preliminary round in four groups (A – D) with four teams each. There were three points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win, two points for a 3-2 win, one point for a 3-2 defeat and one for a 1-3 or 0 : 3 defeat there was no point. In the event of a tie, the rate quotient first decided. The top three teams in each group reached the second round. There, third in the group met runners-up before the respective winners met a group first. The four successful teams in the second round reached the semi-finals. The losers in the semi-finals played for third place, the winners determined the new European champion in the final.

game schedule

First round

The group draw took place on October 21, 2010 in Prague.

In Group A, Serbia prevailed with three wins. Only the Slovenes, who secured second place with a tie-break success against Turkey, were able to win a set against Serbia. Host Austria remained unsuccessful in all three preliminary round games.

The Russians won Group B and suffered their only loss of a set against the winless Portuguese. The Czech Republic achieved a 3-0 win against Estonia in their second game to finish second ahead of the Balts.

In the last game of Group C, the previously undefeated Italians lost after a 2-0 lead against France. They still took first place because the French were previously defeated against Belgium. Belgium's victory was not enough to advance because the Finns tied for points dropped one set.

In Group D, the German team, which had set out for the first European Championship medal with ambition, had to say goodbye early after three 1: 3 defeats. After the worst EM result of the DVV since 1971, there was clear criticism of national coach Raúl Lozano . The Slovak team, which competed as the winner of the Europa League , won their opening game against Bulgaria with 17:15 in the tie-break and after their success against Germany also prevailed against defending champions Poland. The Poles therefore only made it to the next round as third in the group.

Germany played with Patrick Steuerwald , Lukas Kampa , Jochen Schöps , Georg Grozer , Marcus Böhme , Max Günthör , Stefan Hübner , Björn Andrae , Robert Kromm , Marcus Popp , Sebastian Schwarz , Denis Kaliberda , Markus Steuerwald and Ferdinand Tille .

qualification

In addition to the hosts Austria and the Czech Republic , the teams that finished first to fifth at the 2009 European Championships were automatically qualified. They were defending champion Poland , runner-up France , third Bulgaria , fourth Russia and fifth Serbia .

The other teams had to contest a qualification that comprised a total of three rounds.

In the first round on 8./9. and 15./16. May 2010 there were five duels with back and forth legs. Bosnia prevailed against Georgia without losing a set, as did Croatia against Denmark and Hungary against Luxembourg . Romania moved on to a 3-0 win against Moldova after a 3-2 draw in the first leg . Azerbaijan and Great Britain each won their home games in three sets, so ball points were the decisive factors for the British.

The second qualifying round consisted of six groups of four teams each, who met for two tournaments on May 21-23 and May 28-30. The group winners qualified directly for the European Championship, while the group runners-up played further playoff games in the third round in September.

Slovenia remained unbeaten in Group A (tournaments in Maribor and Tel Aviv-Jaffa ) . Spain came in second ahead of Hungary and Israel .

In group B (tournaments in Riga and Heraklion ) Finland lost only in the last game against the second-placed Greeks . Latvia was eliminated, as were the winless British.

In group C (tournaments in Poprad and Merksem ) Belgium won against Slovakia at the beginning , but in the end only finished second behind the Eastern Europeans. The Ukraine and Bosnia-Herzegovina dropped out.

In Group D , the German team won the first tournament in cash without losing a set and only had to give up one set in the last game against the second-placed Estonians at the home tournament in Tübingen . Montenegro and Croatia only managed one victory each.

In Group E (tournaments in Ankara and Gioia del Colle ), Italy managed to win the group ahead of the Turks, who left Belarus and Romania behind, despite a 3-0 win against Turkey .

In Group F (tournaments in Skopje and Rotterdam ) the Dutch could not prevent the Portuguese from winning the group with a 3-0 win on the last day of the match . Macedonia and Sweden were eliminated.

In the third round games on 4th / 5th and 11./12. September brought Belgium with two wins (3: 1 and 3: 2) for the out of the Spaniards, who had won the 2007 tournament . With the same results, Turkey prevailed against Greece. Estonia defeated the Netherlands 3-1 and 3-0.
