Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen (born May 12, 1992 in Ringerike ) is a Norwegian biathlete .
Personal
Christiansen's older brother Eirik Robert was also a biathlete, his younger sister Tiril is a successful freestyle skier who won several medals at the Winter X Games .
Career
Junior area
Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen contested his first international races in the IBU Cup in Idre in 2009 and won first points in his first sprint in 21st place. The highlight of the season was the 2010 World Youth Championships in Torsby , where Christiansen won bronze medals behind Martin Maier and Alexander Petschonkin in the individual, the relay and behind Johannes Kühn and Petschonkin in the sprint race and came fifth in the pursuit. The 2011 Biathlon Youth World Championships in Nové Město na Moravě were even more successful , where he was second in sprint and pursuit, third in individual and relay races. He also won silver in the pursuit and gold with the Norwegian relay at the Junior World Championships in Kontiolahti the following year .
World Cup debut and European title
After these successes, Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen was appointed to the World Cup team for the first time in the 2012/13 season and made his debut in Östersund in December 2012 . In the 10-kilometer sprint, he finished 39th and immediately won his first World Cup points in the first race. At the World Cup of Hochfilzen he made his season debut and won without Nachlader together with Lars Helge Birkeland , Ole Einar Bjørndalen and Henrik L'Abée-Lund , and then everything was had in the IBU Cup change and subsequently adopted at the European Championships in 2013 in Bulgarian Bansko , where he won the sprint and came second in the pursuit. He then returned to the World Cup in Sochi and was able to finish in the top ten in the World Cup for the first time in the Khanty-Mansiysk sprint .
Disease and comeback
In the following 2013/14 season , Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen stabilized in the World Cup and was again part of the victorious season in Hochfilzen. However, his best individual result was a 15th place, which is why he did not qualify for the Olympic Games . The next season began similarly for him; he was only able to get into the top 30 participants in a race once. After the World Cup in Oberhof, he had to end the season due to a rhinovirus .
Christiansen did not do the season preparation in summer 2015 with the Norwegian national team, but with a private team. It was not until January 2016 that the association nominated him again for an international competition, the IBU Cup in Nové Město na Moravě . In the first races after his illness he reached two 17th places. Since the Norwegian World Cup team skipped the races in Canmore, Canada in February, he made his comeback there in the highest racing category. At the European Championships in Tyumen he reached the bronze medal in the single mixed relay with Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold .
In the first race of the IBU Cup 2016/17 in Beitostølen , Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen achieved an individual victory in the international adult division for the second time. After he confirmed this result with a second place in Obertilliach, he was allowed to start again in the World Cup in Oberhof. In Ruhpolding he was part of the Norwegian men's relay for the first time in two years and won with it for the third time in his career. However, he did not create the norm for the World Championships in Hochfilzen and took part in the European Championships again, where he again achieved a medal in the single-mixed relay with Tandrevold, this time silver. After the World Cup he returned to the World Cup by the end of the season, where he finished eighth in the top ten in the pursuit of Kontiolahti .
Overall IBU Cup win and World Cup breakthrough
In November 2017 Christiansen had to qualify for the World Cup team in Sjusjøen , but he did not succeed. For this he started consistently in the IBU Cup , which made him take the lead in the overall standings at the turn of the year after a victory in Obertilliach. As a result, he was allowed to take part in the World Cups in Germany, as in the previous year, but was again unable to qualify for the major event, the Winter Olympics. On the Großer Arber he won the last race before the European Championships, where he won the gold medal in the single mixed relay together with Thekla Brun-Lie in the third attempt . With consistent top 10 results, he regained the lead in the overall IBU Cup and was ultimately able to win it.
After the resignations of Bjørndalen and Emil Hegle Svendsen , Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen got a permanent place in the Norwegian World Cup team for the first time in his career. After fluctuating results on the Pokljuka, he landed on the podium for the first time in Hochfilzen as third in the pursuit. After that, the results were less consistent, but he ran the most successful season of his career so far, including another relay win in Ruhpolding. At the World Cup in North America in February, he made his final breakthrough on an international level. In Canmore he was second in the individual and won the relay, a week later in Soldier Hollow followed the first individual World Cup victory in the sprint and a second place in the pursuit. As the third best Norwegian in the overall standings, behind the brothers Tarjei and Johannes Thingnes Bø , Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen was nominated for the first time for the World Championships at the age of 26 . There he won the gold medal with the Norwegian mixed and men's relay, but was unable to build on the previous successes of the season in the individual races, although he was one of only two participants in the individual competition with eighth place without shooting errors.
