Gennadi Iwanowitsch Kowaljow ( Russian Геннадий Иванович Ковалёв ; born October 10, 1945 in Novy Durulgui , Ononsky Rajon , former Chita Oblast of the Soviet Union ) is a former Soviet biathlete .

Gennady Kovalyov came to the sport late, he began his career as a cross-country skier and only then switched to biathlon. At the beginning of the 1970s he was one of the strongest Soviet biathletes and was a member of the Soviet national team from 1970 to 1975. He was nominated for the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , but was only a substitute runner and was not used. With the Soviet relay team consisting of Tichonow , Safin , Kolmakow and Kowaljow as the final runner, he won the world title at the 1973 Biathlon World Championships . He also celebrated the greatest single success of his career in 1973 in Lake Placid as vice world champion behind his compatriot Alexander Tichonow in the 20 km competition. In 1975 Kovalyov secured the relay title at the Soviet championships . He also won the USSR Cup in 1976 and 1977, was four times champion of the Soviet armed forces and five times army champion.

Before his sporting career, Kovalyov worked in 1963 and 1964 on the sovkhoz "Красная Ималка" (Red Imalka) as a tractor driver. In 1973 he completed an apprenticeship at the "Забайкальский государственный гуманитарно-педагогический университет" (State Humanitarian-Pedagogical Nicholas Gavrilovichy Chernyshevich ). Kovalev is a lieutenant colonel in the Russian Army , of which he was a member from 1964 to 1993, and was awarded the medal "За боевые заслуги" (For Merit in Combat) and Honored Master of Sport . From 1993 he headed a biathlon sports club, from 1998 he was director of the sports club "Olympia", since 2002 he has been director of СДЮШОР (SDJuSchOR), a specialized children's and youth sports school of the Olympic reserve for biathlon in Chita .
