Wolkow at the 2010 World Cup in Kontiolahti

In preparation for the 2009/10 season, Volkov moved up to the Russian A-squad, which included only eight biathletes in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympics . He was also part of the squad at the first Biathlon World Cup of the season in Östersund and made his debut in the sprint race, which he finished in 74th. After that, Wolkow initially only competed in the IBU Cup and showed fluctuating performances there. In Obertilliach he achieved a first single-digit result in 2009 when he finished fifth in a pursuit. In 2010 he won his first IBU Cup race in Nové Město na Moravě with a single. At the first World Cup after the 2010 Winter Olympics , Alexei Volkov took 9th place in the sprint in Kontiolahti and, in addition to his first top 10 placement, also celebrated winning the first World Cup points of his career. He improved this result in the following competitions at Holmenkollen in Oslo , when he reached 4th place in the sprint and 7th place in the pursuit.

The 2010/11 season began for Wolkow with a 24th place in the singles of Östersund, which he was followed by a 31st place in the sprint and a 23rd place in the pursuit. After an 18th place in Pokljuka , which should remain his best World Cup result of the season, he first started again in the IBU Cup, where he reached 2nd place in the Nove Mesto singles. At the European Biathlon Championships in 2011 in Ridnaun , he won the silver medal in the sprint and took gold in the following pursuer. At the season finale in Oslo, he finished the sprint in 37th place and the pursuer in 21st place.

In the 2011/12 season Volkov started with a 11th place in the individual in Östersund. After he was only 93rd in the sprint in the same place, he started the following weekend in Ridnaun at the IBU Cup, where he finished 2nd in the individual and 8th place in the sprint. Then he started again in the World Cup, where he reached the top 10 in Hochfilzen with an 8th and 10th place for the first time since March 2010. Because of these placements, he was nominated for the mixed relay, which he won together with Olga Wiluchina , Olga Saizewa and Anton Schipulin . At the following World Cup in Oberhof , he finished second in the men's relay. At the 2012 European Biathlon Championships , he won the gold medal in sprint and pursuit and also bronze with the Russian men's relay. Wolkow also took part in the Biathlon World Championships for the first time in 2012 , where he reached 21st place in the individual in Ruhpolding , after which he ended the season.

Volkov took part in the 2012 Summer Biathlon World Championships in Ufa , where he won the gold medal in mixed relay and pursuit and the silver medal in the sprint.

At the start of the 2012/13 season , Volkov won the opening race with Russia's mixed relay. He achieved another relay victory with the men's relay in Oberhof. At the Biathlon World Championships 2013 in Nove Mesto, he again only competed in singles and reached 15th place. At the European Championships , which took place in Bansko that season , he remained without a medal for the first time. In the World Cup he reached the top 10 four times in 2013/13. His best result was a 5th place in the pursuit of Oslo.

The Olympic season 2013/14 was the best season of Alexei Volkov. He achieved his first top 10 place of the season with 7th place in the Oberhof sprint. Two days later he achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup in the same place with 2nd place in the mass start . He repeated this performance only 6 days later in the individual from Ruhpolding, which he also finished second. Volkov took part in the 2014 Winter Olympics and was used for the first time in the singles, which he finished with 4 shooting errors in 63rd place. In the season he was the starting runner together with Yevgeny Ustjugow , Dmitri Malyshko and Anton Schipulin Olympic champion. He finished the World Cup season in 21st place overall and 3rd place in the individual World Cup.

In the 2014/15 season , Volkov could not build on these successes. For the first time in the World Cup he started this season in Oberhof, where he finished the sprint in 40th place. At the European Biathlon Championships in Otepää , he competed in singles and relays and won the gold medal in both competitions. In Nove Mesto he and Jana Romanowa won the first-ever single mixed relay. At the 2015 Biathlon World Championships in Kontiolahti, he reached 9th place in the individual, which should also remain his best World Cup result and the only top 10 place of the season. With the Russian relay he reached 4th place. Volkov finished the season in 58th place in the World Cup.

The 2015/16 season got off to a successful start for Wolkow when he reached 3rd place in the individual at the season opener in Östersund. However, he was not used in the sprint and pursuit. The following weekend he won the World Cup in Hochfilzen as a starting runner with the Russian relay and as a final runner in the mixed relay in the IBU Cup in Ridnaun. In Pokljuka he finished 10th in the sprint for the second and last time this season, a top 10 place in the World Cup. At the Biathlon World Championships in Oslo he only took part in the individual, which he finished in 39th place. In the overall World Cup, he finished the season in 43rd place.

In the 2016/17 season Wolkow was used almost exclusively in the second-rate IBU Cup, which he was able to win the overall ranking. He also won the gold medal in the mixed relay at the European Championships in Duszniki-Zdrój, making him the sole record European champion. At the Biathlon World Championships 2017 , Volkov reached 11th place in the individual and won his second gold medal with the relay after the 2014 Winter Games.

In August 2017 Volkov started at the Summer Biathlon World Championships in Tchaikovsky . There he became world champion in the pursuit and the mixed relay, as in 2012, and achieved silver in the sprint.

In the 2017/18 season, Volkov competed in races in the IBU Cup in December and won the single-mixed relay. In January he was allowed to start again in the World Cup and reached a podium with the relay in Ruhpolding. This race was also his last World Cup race. At the 2018 Winter Olympics , Volkov was not allowed to start by the IOC in connection with the McLaren Report . He appealed this decision to the CAS , which, however, was rejected. Volkov contested his last international races in March 2018 in the IBU Cup.

In December 2018, Volkov competed for the last time in races at the national level in Russia. In April 2020, he officially ended his career and was appointed coach of the Russian reserve team.
