Peppe Femling (born March 24, 1992 in Gävle ) is a Swedish biathlete . Femling has been competing in the World Cup since 2014 . With the relay, he became Olympic champion in 2018.

Athletic career

Femling grew up in the municipality of Gävle and initially competed in biathlon and cross-country skiing races in the Högbo GIF in the junior division . He increasingly focused on the sport of biathlon and made his international debut at the Youth World Cup in Torsby - where he attended the sports high school. There he stayed as well as at the Junior World Championships in 2012 and 2013 without a top 30 result in an individual race.

From 2011 onwards, Femling received sporadic and later regular appearances in the IBU Cup . He established himself in the second highest competition series in the adult area with placements in midfield. At the age of 21 he was named the best Swede in his age group in the national team of coach Johan Hagström . In January and March 2014, Femling took part in World Cup races for the first time and finished 89th and 86th respectively in the sprints in Oberhof and Oslo. After Björn Ferry and Carl Johan Bergman resigned after the 2014 Winter Olympics, he got a permanent place in the first Swedish team. In the following winters he reached the top 40 places in individual races and thus collected World Cup points. A 21st place in the 20-kilometer competition at Oslo's Holmenkollen in March 2015 was his best result in an individual World Cup race for years. He also took part in major events and was considered several times in relays, although he did not have a regular seat, but took turns with teammates such as Ted Armgren and Tobias Arwidson , later Martin Ponsiluoma . At the 2018 Olympic Winter Games , Femling finished 32nd in the sprint and 42nd in the pursuit. In the final men's relay , he took the position of the starting runner and handed over to Jesper Nelin in fifth place . The relay, whose final positions were occupied by Sebastian Samuelsson and Fredrik Lindströn , won the gold medal - with his first podium result in an international race, Femling became Olympic champion.

In preparation for the 2018/19 season, Femling injured himself in August 2018 when he avoided a car while training for a roller ski competition and stabbed his stick through his leg. He was able to take part in all competitions of the World Cup winter, won the relay race in Hochfilzen together with Martin Ponsiluoma, Torstein Stenersen and Sebastian Samuelsson and improved his best individual result to ninth place, which he achieved in the short singles of Canmore in January 2019. Femling was one of only three athletes classified among 94 who hit with all 20 shots. Overall, he increased his results, reached the top 20 in three races at the 2019 World Championships and thus qualified for a mass start for the first time in his career. He finished the 2019/20 season as 46th of the overall World Cup.

Personal

In his youth, femling was an artist in the youth circus near his home town of Gävle and performed as a unicyclist and diabolo juggler. He has two older brothers and is in a relationship with his teammate Anna Magnusson .
