Anna Magnusson (born March 31, 1995 in Piteå ) is a Swedish biathlete . She has been contesting World Cup races since 2015 and won the silver medal in the women's relay at both the 2018 Olympic Games and the 2019 World Championships.

Career

Anna Magnusson started cross-country skiing in Hemmingsmarks If at the age of six and later switched to biathlon in Piteå SK . In 2013 she took part in the European Youth Olympic Festival , the following year in the Youth World Championships in Presque Isle , where she was seventh in the individual, ninth in the sprint and 13th in the pursuit. With Amanda Somonsson and Hanna Öberg , she also finished seventh in the relay race. At the following two world championships in the junior division, Magnusson placed in the top ten several times and in 2016 won the silver medal in the relay and the bronze medal in the sprint alongside Öberg and Sofia Myhr .

At the age of 19, Magnusson was accepted into the Swedish A-squad for the first time in April 2014 for summer preparation, which was significantly younger with a view to the 2018 Winter Olympics and whose coach was Wolfgang Pichler from 2015 . She competed in individual races in the IBU Cup and received her first World Cup appearances as a relay runner in January 2015. As a successor, she was nominated for the following World Championships and, due to Ingela Andersson's illness-related failure, she started in the 15-kilometer individual race, in which she was 72nd, as well as in the relay, with which she finished eighth.

Magnusson remained a member of the Swedish World Cup team in the following years. In winter 2016/17 she reached the points of the first 40 athletes in 21 of 23 individual races - with a seventh place in the mass start of Antholz as the best result - and was the highest-placed Swede as 23rd of the overall World Cup. In March 2017 she was also a two-time national champion and was named Biathlete of the Year (cross-gender, in the original: "Årets skidskytt") by the Swedish Federation . The position as Sweden's most successful biathlete took over from 2018 Magnusson's long-time club mate and friend Hanna Öberg , who established herself among the world's best with an Olympic victory and a world championship title. Magnusson reached the points in just a few competitions, underwent an operation on his wrist in the summer of 2019 after an injury and thus missed several competitions. In the overall rankings of the World Cup from 2018 to 2020, she was outside the top 60, even though she achieved top 20 results in individual races.

Magnusson achieved her greatest successes with the Swedish women's relay, in which she competed at all major events - World Championships and Olympic Games - from 2015 to 2019. In January 2018 she stood in Oberhof at the side of Linn Persson , Mona Brorsson and Elisabeth Högberg as third for the first time on a World Cup podium. A few weeks later, Persson, Brorsson, Magnusson and Hanna Öberg won the Olympic silver medal , and in 2019 also the silver medal at the home world championships in Östersund in the same line-up . At the World Cup, Magnusson brought the Swedish relay team clearly into the lead with two faultless shooting bouts and handed over Öberg, who was 20 seconds ahead of the final runner, whereupon shooting coach Johan Hagström highlighted her performance as one of the best of her career.

Personal

Magnusson grew up in the municipality of Piteå , where she initially played soccer as well as skiing. As a teenager she moved to Sollefteå , where she attended the biathlon ski high school for four years, and then moved to the Swedish biathlon center Östersund . For a long time, her career ran parallel to that of Hanna Öbergs , who, like her at Piteå SK, started with the biathlon and was accepted into the Swedish World Cup team a year after Magnusson. Both stated in a joint interview with the regional newspaper Norrbottens kuriren in 2017 that the friendly competition had significantly advanced their development. Magnusson is in a relationship with her teammate Peppe Femling .
