The 49th  Biathlon World Championships were held from 8 to 19 February 2017 Austrian Hochfilzen instead.

Against competitor Östersund ( Sweden ), Hochfilzen secured the contract to host the world championships in the summer of 2012. After 1978 and 2005 , the title fights were held for the third time in the municipality in the Kitzbühel district .

The competitions were again held as part of the World Cup , and the results of the championships were therefore also included in the World Cup rankings. As in previous years, all disciplines of the World Cup were held in Hochfilzen, with the exception of the single mixed relay .

In the following year 2018, instead of the World Championships, the Olympic Winter Games will be on the program again.

Venue

Biathlon World Championships 2017 (Austria)
Hochfilzen
Hochfilzen
Location in Austria

The competitions took place in the cross-country skiing and biathlon center Hochfilzen , which is located in the Austrian municipality of Hochfilzen . Hochfilzen is located in the Pillerseetal in the state of Tyrol , right on the border with the state of Salzburg , about halfway between the provincial capitals Innsbruck and Salzburg .

In Hochfilzen, races are usually held annually as part of the biathlon world cup , and Hochfilzen also hosted the biathlon world championships in 1978 and 2005 .

A total of 20 million euros were invested in the infrastructure of the stadium for the 2017 title fights. The main project was the extension and renovation of the central building. As part of this, a new team and service building was erected, which houses 30 wax and service booths with a modern exhaust air system and 30 changing rooms. A new indoor shooting range with a treadmill was built, which provides 570 m² of space as a media center with a view of the shooting range during the competitions. The teams have a direct, short connection to the main building from the service area. The roller ski track was extended by over a kilometer and additional access and emergency routes were built.

The opening ceremony and the award of medals took place at the Kulturhaus in Hochfilzen, the medal awards on the last day of the competition and the final event were held directly in the stadium.

Rule change

At the World Championships, a rule change to the "IBU Event and Competition Rules" came into effect for the first time, which was introduced at the initiative of the DSV . At world championships, the world champions or the Olympic gold medal winners of the previous year have personal right to start in individual, sprint and mass start competitions. Therefore, the national association of this athlete has an additional starting place available for the defending champion, which goes beyond the usual quota. However, since athletes always have to qualify for participation in the pursuit race via the sprint, since these world championships according to IBU event and competition rules, 12.6.1.1.1 a the defending champions in the pursuit competition have a personal right to start in the sprint. Therefore, Germany was not only allowed to register four athletes for the sprint, but also Laura Dahlmeier , who became the world pursuit champion in Oslo in 2016 . Dahlmeier came second in the sprint and won the pursuit race again this year. With the men, Martin Fourcade could not benefit from this regulation, because as sprint world champion he already had personal right to start in sprint races.

course

The weather was mostly good at the biathlon world championships in Hochfilzen. In mid-February temperatures up to 11 ° C in the shade were measured. This caused problems for some athletes who usually compete in winter around or even well below freezing point . The Norwegian Emil Hegle Svendsen suffered a collapse after the sprint race, had to receive medical attention and was taken to the hospital for a check-up as a precaution. In the individual competition, several athletes started with short sleeves, the Austrian Daniel Mesotitsch even in shorts. Even Laura Dahl Meier suffered after winning the gold medal in the individual competition and their victorious relay race faint and was looked after by the team doctor. Two days later she was back at the start of the women's mass start and won another gold medal.

The surprising winner in the individual competition was the 35-year-old Lowell Bailey , who became the first US-American to win gold at a biathlon world championship. For Bailey, who wanted to end his career at the end of last season, it was also the first victory in the Biathlon World Cup . His teammate Susan Dunklee won the silver medal in the mass start, the first ever medal for a biathlete from the United States. The Germans Benedikt Doll and Simon Schempp won their first individual medal at world championships with gold in the sprint and mass start.

The most successful participant was the German Laura Dahlmeier, who was the first female athlete to win five gold medals at a world championship. She also won silver in the sprint. The most successful nation was Germany with seven gold medals and one silver medal, ahead of France (1 × gold, 2 × silver and 4 × bronze) and the Czech Republic (1 × gold, 2 × silver and 1 × bronze).

A total of 143,700 spectators were in the stadium during the competitions. A record number of spectators was the men's relay competition on February 18 with 22,300 spectators, followed by the mass starts on February 19 with 22,100 spectators and the pursuit competitions on February 12 with 19,600 spectators.

reporting

The pictures for the television broadcasts were made available by ORF . It was there with 170 employees and 49 cameras, and the competitions were broadcast in almost 60 countries around the world. The ORF itself - as with the World Cups - had the former biathletes Günther Beck and Christoph Sumann alternately as experts and as co-commentators on site. The races were broadcast live on ORF eins or on ORF SPORT + .

The reporting for German television was shared by ARD and ZDF . Former biathletes Sven Fischer , Herbert Fritzenwenger and Kati Wilhelm were there as experts and co-commentators .

Sigi Heinrich and Michael Greis commented on the races for Eurosport .

doping

Suspected doping against the Kazakh team

On February 8, 2017, the house of the Kazakh biathlon team was searched by the Federal Criminal Police Office . This was preceded by a box that was disposed of at a petrol station in East Tyrol in January - after the World Cup in Antholz - which contained a considerable amount of disposable syringes, medical material, records as well as IBU accreditations and documents. After an assessment by specialists from the National Anti-Doping Agency Austria , it was assumed that the contents of the box could be assigned to the Kazakh team. The Innsbruck public prosecutor's office then ordered a house search, which the Tyrol State Criminal Police Office carried out with 30 officers and which found “a considerable amount of medical products and drugs as well as cell phones”. In addition, blood and urine tests were carried out by the Austrian Anti-Doping Agency in coordination with the IBU. Investigations have been carried out to determine whether anti-doping laws have been violated and whether sports fraud has occurred.

Temporary suspension of Ekaterina Glasyrina

On February 10, 2017, the IBU announced that the Russian athlete Jekaterina Glasyrina had been temporarily suspended. As a result of the second McLaren report , a working group was set up to collect further data on the athletes named in the report. This group came to the conclusion that a suspension should be issued because several samples from the athlete may have contained banned substances and it could not be ruled out that the samples taken by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency had also been tampered with. The IBU Executive Board followed this recommendation and suspended Glasyrina. This should have started in the sprint that day. Glasyrina's starting place was given to her teammate Irina Uslugina .

Raid on IBU headquarters

The Federal Criminal Police raided on 10 April 2018, the business premises of the IBU in Salzburg. According to the World Anti-Doping Agency , the raid, which was carried out in coordination with the Norwegian police and Interpol , is related to doping. The investigation is in particular against President Anders Besseberg and Secretary General Nicole Resch .

Investigators are also focusing on the 2017 World Cup. In the 2016/17 season, 17 out of 22 Russian athletes are said to have been doped in the World Cup and IBU Cup .

Investigations against Russian athletes and coaches

During the World Cup in Hochfilzen in the 2018/19 season , the Russian federation was informed by the Austrian public prosecutor about an investigation against five Russian supervisors and five athletes. The allegations concern the world championships in Hochfilzen and are directed against "five supervisors of the Russian biathlon team for using prohibited substances or methods for the purpose of doping and five athletes of this team for serious fraud in connection with doping". The public prosecutor published neither details nor the names of the persons concerned, with reference to an ongoing procedure. Press representatives named Anton Shipulin , Alexander Loginow , Evgeni Garanitschew , Alexei Volkov and Irina Starych as affected persons.

Incidents at award ceremonies

Refusal to shake hands

The Russians Anton Schipulin and Alexander Loginow refused to shake hands with the French Martin Fourcade at the Flower Ceremony for the mixed relay, whereupon he "first scornfully applauded and then immediately left the scene." In contrast, Loginow told the Russian news agency TASS that Fourcade did not have his hand want to shake, whereupon Schipulin turned around and did not congratulate the Frenchman on second place. This was preceded by Fourcade's criticism of the Russian biathlon federation, which had nominated Loginow for the world championships shortly after his two-year ban on blood doping by EPO had expired. The Russian association then demanded sanctions against Fourcade from the IBU . In the run-up to the world championships, Fourcade had also threatened to boycott a podium with Loginow. During the last change in the mixed relay, Fourcade "ran a dangling swing in the transition area and [had] crossed Loginow's ski, which then fell". Although this did not result in any disadvantage for the expiring Loginow, Schipulin tried to explain the behavior of his team with the words "We saw situations today in which there was a lot of negativity from the French against us" and noted that "the entire behavior [...] not particularly nice ”. Fourcade dismissed the guilt, TV experts like the former biathletes Sven Fischer and Herbert Fritzenwenger see no wrongdoing in the French, as does Erik Lesser , who says: “You can't blame him for that because everything was within the permitted range. But he could have solved it more confidently ”. The Russian men's trainer Ricco Groß also sees it as “a normal racing situation and not an intention”. He demands “to keep calm now, to hold talks and to approach the whole thing diplomatically”.

Wrong Russian anthem

At the award ceremony for the men's relay race, instead of the Russian national anthem, the patriotic song was incorrectly played for the winning Russian team, which was the Russian national anthem from 1990 to 2000 and was then replaced by today's anthem by Vladimir Putin . The Russian TV presenter Dimitri Guberniew therefore snatched the microphone from the ceremony announcer, played the correct anthem and passed the microphone on to the Russian team, which then sang the anthem to the end. The organizer then apologized and played the correct anthem again over the loudspeakers.
