Federica Sanfilippo (born October 24, 1990 in Sterzing , South Tyrol ) is an Italian biathlete .

Athletic career

Federica Sanfilippo lives in Ridnaun and starts for ASV Ridnaun . She has been practicing biathlon since 2000 and became a member of the Italian national team in 2008. She made her international debut in 2007 as part of the IBU Junior Cup . The first major international event was the 2010 Biathlon Junior World Championships in Torsby , where the Italian was 32nd in the individual, 23rd in the sprint and 31st in the pursuit race. At the national championships in Valdidentro , she won the sprint and pursuit titles in the juniors. She won the overall ranking of the Junior Alpine Cup in 2010. A year later, Sanfilippo finished 41st in the individual at the 2011 Biathlon Junior World Championships in Nové Město na Moravě and was 58th in the sprint. She did not start in the pursuit race. At the junior races of the European Biathlon Championships 2011 in Ridnaun, Austria, she was only used in singles and was 29.

Sanfilippo has competed in women since 2008. In 2009 she won the bronze medal at the Italian championships with Christa Perathoner and Monika Messner in the relay race. Towards the end of the 2009/10 season she made her debut in the IBU Cup in Martell and immediately won points by finishing 33rd in the sprint. In the following season she achieved her best result in the racing series so far, finishing 18th in a sprint in Ridanna. A week later she achieved a podium finish for the first time in third place in the mixed relay race alongside Roberta Fiandino , René-Laurent Vuillermoz and Pietro Dutto .

She made her World Cup debut in the winter of 2013/14 on December 6, 2013 in Hochfilzen, Austria, and finished the sprint in 89th place. At her home World Cup in Antholz , she also failed to reach the points. In the following season , from January 2015, she started increasingly in the World Cup and achieved points in several races. At the 2015 Biathlon World Championships in Kontiolahti , Finland , she narrowly missed her first top 10 place in the World Cup with an 11th place in the individual competition. In the 2015/16 season she was part of the World Cup team from the start and achieved a podium finish for the first time in her career with a second place in the second race of the winter, the sprint in Östersund , Sweden . Several good results followed, as well as a first and a second place with the Italian women's relay. At the Biathlon World Championships in 2016 on Holmenkollen , however, she could not convince and missed the points in sprint, pursuit and individual races. She did not qualify for the mass start and she was also not nominated for the women's relay. She ended the season after the World Championships and did not take part in the last World Cup of the season in Khanty-Mansiysk , Russia .
