Torsby is the capital of the municipality of Torsby in the Swedish province of Värmland County and the historic province of Värmland . Torsby is the center of the Finnskogen region.
The place is at the northern end of Lake Fryken . There are sawmills and small industries here. Torsby is the terminus of the Kil – Torsby railway line . The airport has a daily connection to Stockholm .
Sports culture
In Torsby there is a ski school ( Riksskidgymnasium ) as well as some primary schools.
In June 2006, Sweden’s first and so far only ski tunnel was opened in Torsby, planned and built by the local company NIWA. It is 1.3 kilometers long and is also suitable for biathlon .
Immigration history
Between the end of the 16th and the end of the 17th century, the Finnskogen region was settled by Finnish immigrants, the so-called forest fins . In the large coniferous forests they carried out slash and burn ( finn. Huuhta ) in order to obtain new agricultural land. Torsby is the center of this Swedish-Norwegian region.
