Friedrich Jagiello
Friedrich Jagiello , Polish Fryderyk Jagiellończyk (born April 27, 1468 in Cracow , Poland ; † March 13, 1503 in Cracow), Polish Prince and Duke of Lithuania , was Bishop of Cracow , Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of Poland-Lithuania .
Life
He was the son of King Casimir IV of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania (1427-1492) from his marriage to Elisabeth von Habsburg (1437-1505), a daughter of the Roman-German King Albrecht II (1368-1437) from the House Luxembourg . The Jagiellonians are also an old noble family.
Frederick was elected Bishop of Cracow by the cathedral chapter on April 19, 1488 , confirmed by Pope Innocent VIII on May 2, 1488 , ordained a priest on March 24, 1493 in Cracow and on September 20, 1493 by Pope Alexander VI. created a cardinal with the titled deaconry Santa Lucia in Septisolio . On October 2, 1493 he was appointed Archbishop of Gniezno and he received episcopal ordination on December 21, 1493. As Metropolitan of Gniezno and Primate of Poland-Lithuania , he had the right to crown the Polish kings. It can be assumed that he crowned his brother Alexander King of Poland in 1501.
Friedrich died at the age of 34. In the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow there is a tombstone made by the artist Hermann Vischer the Younger .
