Seán Doherty

Seán Doherty (born June 29, 1944 in Boyle , County Roscommon , † June 7, 2005 in Letterkenny , County Donegal ) was an Irish politician of Fianna Fáil , Minister and President ( Cathaoirleach ) of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ).

biography

Doherty was a civil servant and auctioneer and began his national political career as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil in 1977 with the first election to the deputy ( Teachta Dála ) of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ). He first represented the interests of the constituency of Roscommon-Leitrim and then from 1981 to 1989 the constituency of Roscommon .

In March 1980 he was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Justice by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Charles J. Haughey and thus took over his first government office as "junior minister" until the end of Haughey's tenure on June 30, 1981.

After the re-electoral victory of Fianna Fáil, Haughey appointed him on March 9, 1982 in his second government, which he belonged to until the end of his term on December 14, 1982 after the defeat by Fine Gael .

He suffered a defeat in the 1989 general election, but subsequently became a member of the Senate as a representative of the civil service and administration group. This elected him on November 1, 1989 as his spokesman (Cathaoirleach). He held this position until he left the Senate on January 22, 1992.

He was then re-elected to the House of Commons in 1992, where he represented the interests of the Longford-Roscommon constituency until 2002 . Most recently Doherty was from December 4, 1997 to 2002 chairman of the House Committee on Public Enterprises and Transportation.
