Raphael Damian Patrick "Ray" Burke ( Irish : Rae de Búrca ; born September 30, 1943 in Dublin ) is an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil and former minister.

biography

Ray Burke, a former real estate agent , began his political career in 1973 when he was first elected as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil to the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ), where he first represented the constituency of Dublin County North until 1981 and then the constituency of Dublin North .

Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Jack Lynch appointed him in July 1978 initially as Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Energy, an office that he held until October 1980 under Lynch's successor, Charles Haughey . He was then Minister of the Environment until the end of Haughey's tenure on June 30, 1981.

He took over the office of environment minister again in the second Haughey cabinet from March to December 1982. When Haughey became prime minister for the third time in March 1987, this Burke again appointed to his cabinet. He was a member of this until November 1988 as energy minister and at the same time as communication minister until February 1991. After a government reshuffle, he became Minister for Industry and Trade in November 1988. In another government reshuffle, he became Minister of Justice after the general election on July 12, 1989, and held this office until the end of Haughey's term on February 11, 1992.

On 26 June 1997 appointed him Prime Minister Bertie Ahern to the Foreign Minister . Just a few months later, he resigned from this office on October 7, 1997 and at the same time renounced his mandate in the Dáil Éireann after corruption allegations had been brought against him .

During the tax evasion trial against him , he pleaded "guilty" in July 2004. On January 24, 2005, Ray Burke was sentenced by a court to a prison term of 6 months; in June 2005 he was released from custody after serving an extensive sentence.
