John Gormley (2010)

John Gormley ( Irish Seán Ó Gormlaigh , born August 4, 1959 in Dublin ) is an Irish politician and former party leader of the Green Party .

biography

Gormley attended St. Munchin's College in Limerick , University College Dublin and Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg in Germany .

In 1991 he was elected to the Dublin City Council and was Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1994 to 1995 . This made him the first green mayor of the city. June 1997 Gormley was first elected to the Dáil Éireann , of which he was a member until February 2011. After the 2007 elections and the associated government participation of his party, he became Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's cabinet . The following month Gormley was elected his party's new chairman; the previous party chairman Trevor Sargent resigned on June 13, 2007.

In January 2011, the Green Party left the government coalition. As a result, Gormely resigned from his ministerial post. In the elections for the 31st Dáil Éireann next month, he was unable to defend his seat and resigned from the Dáil. Eamon Ryan succeeded him as chairman of the Green Party at the end of May 2011 .

Gormley is married with two children.
