biography

Éamon Ó Cuív, a son of the renowned philologist and historian Brian Ó Cuív, is the grandson of Éamon de Valera , the long-time Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) and President of Ireland . His uncle Vivion de Valera was also a member of the House of Commons ( Teachta Dála ). He is also a cousin of the politician Síle de Valera .

He himself initially worked as an economic manager and then began his political career in 1989 as a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ). There he represented the education and culture group until 1992. He was then elected a member of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) in 1992 and has since represented the constituency of Galway West .

After the Fianna Fáil electoral victory, he was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Art, Inheritance, Irish-speaking Areas ( Gaeltacht ) and the Islands by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Bertie Ahern on July 8, 1997 , and thus became the “junior minister” of his cousin Síla de Valera headed ministry. On June 19, 2001, he was first Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, before von Ahern finally succeeded Síla de Valera as Minister for Community, Rural Affairs and the Gaeltacht on June 6, 2002.

He also held this office after Brian Cowen came into power until the latter appointed him Minister for Social Protection in a cabinet reshuffle on March 23, 2010, an office he held until his party's electoral defeat on February 25, 2011. Previously, after Brian Cowen's resignation in January 2011, he had applied for the party chairmanship, but was defeated by the new chairman Micheál Martin .
