Oliver J. Flanagan

Oliver J. Flanagan (born May 22, 1920 in Mountmellick , County Laois , † April 26, 1987 ) was an Irish politician of the Fine Gael .

biography

After finishing school, Flanagan worked as a carpenter and later as an auctioneer .

His political career began in 1943 when he was first elected Member of the House of Commons ( Teachta Dála ) ( Dáil Éireann ). There he initially represented the interests of the Monetary Reform Party in the constituency of Leix-Offaly until 1948 . He was then an independent MP for this constituency until 1954 , before he joined the Fine Gael. He finally represented this until 1987 in the electoral district of Leix-Offaly, which was renamed Laoighis-Offaly in 1961 .

After joining Fine Gael, Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) John A. Costello appointed him Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture from June 1954 to March 1957. In the cabinet of Liam Cosgrave Barrett was first from September 1975 to December 1976 Parliamentary Secretary to the Secretary of Defense. As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he was appointed Defense Minister on December 2, 1976 . He held this office until the end of Cosgrave's tenure on May 25, 1977.

In 1987, a few weeks before his death, he decided not to run again for the House of Commons. Instead, his son Charles Flanagan was elected MP in the Laoighis-Offaly constituency.
