Tony Killeen ( Irish Antóin Ó Cillín , born June 9, 1952 in Corofin , County Clare ) is an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil and from March 2010 to January 2011 Minister of Defense of Ireland .

biography

Killeen, who was a teacher at a state school ( National School ) by profession , began his national political career as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil in 1992 with the election to deputy ( Teachta Dála ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ) and represented in this after three subsequent re-elections since then the constituency of Clare .

During his membership in Parliament he was first from December 18, 1997 to 2002 chairman of the House Committee on Affairs of the Members and then from November 7, 2002 to December 16, 2004 of the House Committee on Education and Science.

On September 29, 2004 he was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Enterprise, Trade and Employment by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Bertie Ahern , taking on his first post as “junior minister” in a government. Subsequently, between June 20, 2007 and May 12, 2008, he was Minister of State in the Ministries for the Environment, Inheritance and Local Administration as well as for Communication, Energy and Natural Resources, and during this time he was particularly responsible for the environment and energy. He then became Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and was responsible for fisheries and forestry.

On March 23, 2010, Prime Minister Brian Cowen finally appointed him to his cabinet as Secretary of Defense.
