Sylvester Barrett

Sylvester Barrett ( Irish Salbhastar Bairéad , born May 18, 1926 in Darragh , Ennis , County Clare , † May 8, 2002 ) was an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil .

biography

Barrett originally worked as an auctioneer . His political career began on March 14, 1968 when he was elected in a by-election to fill the vacant seat of the late Fine Gael politician William Murphy as Member of Parliament ( Teachta Dála ) of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ). There he represented the interests of Fianna Fáil in the constituency of Clare until 1987 .

From July 1977 to October 1980 he was first Environment Minister in the governments of Prime Ministers ( Taoiseach ) Jack Lynch and Charles J. Haughey . As part of a cabinet reshuffle, Haughey appointed him Minister of Defense in October 1980 . He held this office until the end of Haughey's tenure on June 30, 1981. In the second Haughey cabinet he was Minister of State at the Finance Minister between March and December 1981 .

Barrett was also a member of the European Parliament from 1984 and 1989 . After he refused to run for the lower house again in 1987, he decided in 1989 not to run for the European Parliament again.
