Rory O'Hanlon

Rory O'Hanlon ( Irish Ruairí Ó hAnnluain , born February 7, 1934 in Dublin ) is an Irish politician of Fianna Fáil , former Minister and Chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of Dáil Éireann , the lower house of the Irish Parliament .

biography

O'Hanlon studied at University College Dublin and worked as a general practitioner after studying medicine and earning a doctorate in medicine.

He began his political career in 1973 when he ran as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil in a by-election for a vacant seat in the Dáil Éireann. However, he did not manage to be elected to the Dáil until the next regular election in 1977. Since then he has represented the interests of the constituency of Cavan-Monaghan .

From October to December 1982 he was briefly Minister of State at the Minister for Social Welfare. He was a member of the third cabinet of Taoiseach Charles J. Haughey from March 10, 1987 to November 14, 1991 as Minister of Health. He was then Environment Minister until the end of Haughey's tenure on February 11, 1992.

In July 1997 he was elected vice-chairman (Leas-Cheann Comhairle) by the House of Commons. From June 6, 2002 to June 14, 2007 he was finally as the successor to Séamus Pattison Chairman (Ceann Comhairle) of the Dáil Éireann. In this role, he was also vice chairman of Anglo Irish Parliamentary Society ( British-Irish Parliamentary Body Inter ) and Chairman of the Committee on modalities and privileges ( Committee on Procedure and Privileges ). He was succeeded as Ceann Comhairle by his party friend John O'Donoghue .

He is married and has four sons and two daughters.
