5 gegen Jauch is a German quiz show in which Günther Jauch has to compete against a five-person team of candidates in a question and answer duel. The show is broadcast at irregular intervals on Fridays or Saturdays on the private broadcaster RTL . After the show had been presented by Oliver Pocher for eight years , Frank Buschmann took over the moderation from December 2017 to April 2018 . In June 2019 it was announced that Oliver Pocher should moderate the show again.
Gameplay
Episode 1 to 4
In the first episodes, Günther Jauch was interviewed by five previously selected candidates. Each of the participants brought their own question. This was the golden question intended to secure the money. In addition, each participant was allowed to choose four other submitted questions which, in his opinion, could not be answered by Günther Jauch. As soon as Jauch answered a question correctly, the candidate dropped out and went home with the money that he had earned up to the golden question (possibly empty-handed if the golden question was not answered incorrectly). The rest of the money went into the jackpot. In the best case, the remaining candidate could win 250,000 euros; over several episodes, the jackpot could grow even further. Jauch had five jokers available, but he was not allowed to use them for golden questions.
Winning probabilities
One of the attractions of the game was that each question was considered very specific and difficult to answer. Jauch, who is said to have good general knowledge, should be able to master this task. From a mathematical point of view, every player would have been able to correctly answer a question with four options, but with a probability of 25% just by guessing, instead of Jauch, even if completely ignorant. The probability of guessing wrong was therefore 75%. The probability of answering all five questions incorrectly results from the product of the individual probabilities, specifically = 0.237. The opposite probability is 0.763. Just by guessing and without any knowledge, the chance of guessing correctly at least once per candidate in such a game is 76.3%. Jauch's existing jokers and actual knowledge further reduced a candidate's chances of winning. From episode 5 the rules of the game have been revised.
Episode 5 to 10
The revised rules stipulate that there are five candidates again, but that they all have to have something in common. The team of five and Günther Jauch then have to answer the same questions one after the other. Jauch has to compete alone against the group that is allowed to consult. In order not to get the solution of those approaching, Günther Jauch put on headphones, from which "deafening" music comes, and dark glasses.
Profit levels
A total of 12 questions, each with four possible answers, are played. With each round the money win and the difficulty of questions increases. The possible total profit was increased by € 50,000 to € 300,000. Whoever has more money in the game account after the all-or-nothing question, actually has the winning amount and leaves the game as the winner. The opponent comes away empty-handed. If the challengers win, they can use the money freely, but if Günther Jauch is victorious, the winnings will be donated. The all-or-nothing question has a special position. In front of this, an amount between € 1 and the already earned profit (up to € 150,000) must be placed. The problem with this is: If you answer the question correctly, this amount is added, if you give an incorrect answer, this amount is deducted again. So you can lie behind until the end and turn it around with the all-or-nothing question.

joker
Both the five-person team and Günther Jauch have a telephone joker and a public joker. The jokers can only be used up to the 11th question. The all-or-nothing question must be answered without a joker.
- Audience joker: With the audience joker, candidates have 30 seconds to ask the studio audience for their opinion. Any number of viewers can be interviewed within this time. If the question is answered correctly, a viewer from the audience receives 500 euros.
- Telephone joker: With the telephone joker, viewers from the studio audience who think they know someone who can answer the question can report. This is then called and has to answer the question. If he can answer the question correctly, he will also receive 500 euros.
Episodes 11 to 29, since episode 34
From program 11 onwards, the concept was changed again. The rules of the game remained unchanged, Günther Jauch's opponents were always five celebrities up to episode 29. Since episode 34, celebrities have been competing against Jauch again.
joker
Both the five-person team and Günther Jauch have two jokers each. If a joker is used, Oliver Pocher and Günther Jauch duel in different games of skill, each with three rounds. For each round won, there is no wrong answer option for whoever used the joker.
Episodes 30 to 33
When episode 30 was broadcast, not only was the moderator changed, from this point on, five non-prominent candidates competed against Günther Jauch. The concept also changed the winning levels, the jokers and the final round. In the final, Günther Jauch competes against each candidate individually in five rounds. Each round has its own area of knowledge, from which a maximum of twelve either-or questions are asked to those who believe more correct answers. If the previously estimated number of correct answers is not reached, the round automatically goes to the opponent. The one who wins three rounds wins the amount of money previously won.
joker
Both the five-person team and Günther Jauch have two jokers each. If a joker is used, Frank Buschmann and Günther Jauch duel in different games of skill, each with three rounds. For each round won, there is no wrong answer option for whoever used the joker.
Course of the game
Episode 1 to 4
Jauch was not beaten in the first three broadcasts. At the end of the third episode, the first round was played with new candidates, with Jauch defeating one. In the fourth edition, however, all four remaining candidates made it to the last question. Jauch was able to beat two more with the help of jokers, the other two won and had to share the jackpot.
Since episode 5
In the fifth broadcast, Günther Jauch was not beaten. In the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth editions, Jauch was defeated by the candidates. In the tenth show, Jauch managed to win again. In the eleventh show, Jauch had to face five celebrities who could defeat him. In the twelfth show, the result was particularly tight. Both the 5 comedians and Günther Jauch had earned € 135,000 before the all-or-nothing question. In the following question, both decided on the correct answer. Now it had to decide who had bet more money. In the end, Jauch left the show as a winner because he had wagered all of his earned money. In the 14th broadcast, Jauch managed to catch up with the correct answer, because he had, as always, been brave. From his profit he donated € 50,000 to the celebrities, the rest went to the ark. In the 15th episode, Jauch had won 149,000 of a possible 150,000 euros before the all-or-nothing question. That was a new record up until then. He “only” won 190,000 euros because he hadn't put everything in order to have a small amount left over if he gave a wrong answer. In this show, too, he donated € 50,000. In episodes 30 and 31 Günther Jauch was defeated by the candidates who earned € 183,000 and € 299,000, respectively. His win of € 194,000 in episode 32 means a jackpot for this amount in the next episode.

Others
An accident occurred while recording the 17th program. Konny Reimann was supposed to drive the four other participants Ina Müller, Jorge Gonzalez, Natascha Ochsenknecht and David Garrett to the studio in a minibus. He drove the bus against the podium on which the moderators Günther Jauch and Oliver Pocher were sitting. Ina Müller and Natascha Ochsenknecht were bruised. In addition, the bus and the platform were damaged in the accident. Oliver Pocher's moderation desk fell over and had to be replaced by another. There was property damage amounting to 75,000 euros, which was borne by the RTL insurance company. David Garrett's Stradivarius was also on the pedestal . The violin is worth 5 million euros. However, it was not damaged in the accident.
