Wilhelm Horst Lichter (born January 15, 1962 in Nettesheim ) is a German chef , television chef , cookbook author and presenter . In addition, he occasionally appears on stage as an entertainer .

Life

Horst Lichter grew up as the eldest son of the miner Anton Lichter and his wife Margret Lichter, nee. Heikamp, in the Rhenish lignite district in Gill, a district of Rommerskirchen . At the age of fourteen he began a three-year apprenticeship as a chef with Lutz Winter in the “Alte Post” hotel and restaurant in Bergheim . He chose the profession of cook because he had very positive associations with eating together at the table. As he was disappointed by the tone in commercial kitchens and the fixation on turnover and profit, after a few positions as a young chef he worked in Mönchengladbach and Cologne, among other places, like his father as a worker in a briquette factory . He got married at the age of 19 and got into financial difficulties after buying a house. In addition to his shifts in the mining industry, he was forced to work five days a week in a junkyard. He had his first stroke at the age of 26 and the second followed at 28, along with a heart attack . During the subsequent stay in the rehab clinic , he made the decision to fundamentally change his life.

Regarding his second stroke, Lichter announced that he had a near-death experience . He reported in the Johannes B. Kerner program on February 21, 2007 that although he had noticed all that was happening around him, he wanted to be left alone. He also felt no more pain.

Lichter has two children from his first marriage; a third child from this marriage died as an infant. Another relationship resulted in a daughter. He is married to Nada Lichter for the third time and lived in Badenweiler for eight years , in Cologne since 2020.

The Oldiethek

On January 28, 1990, he opened a restaurant in a former dance hall and car repair shop in Rommerskirchen - Butzheim , initially in addition to full-shift work in the briquette factory . This became better known and in 1995 it was converted into the “Oldiethek” restaurant. The object was shaped by Horst Lichter's passion for collecting ; cars, motorcycles, antiques, junk and kitsch were on display in the restaurant. The warm dishes were prepared by Lichter himself exclusively in a Flemish coal oven in front of the guests. There was no menu . In the evening, Lichter recommended different menus for guests to choose from. A lunch menu was not offered. After Lichter was only able to cook irregularly in the "Oldiethek" due to its increasing other activities, the restaurant was closed at the end of 2010; the building was subsequently sold empty.
