Location of the town of Korschenbroich in the Rhine district of Neuss | ||
Korschenbroich (with the extension-i in the final syllable -broich , spoken -brooch [ ˈbʁoːχ ]) is a German medium- sized town on the Lower Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia , which belongs to the Rhine district of Neuss . Korschenbroich is located between the metropolitan areas of Mönchengladbach , Krefeld and Düsseldorf and is part of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region .
geography
The urban area of Korschenbroich is located on the left Lower Rhine in the lowlands of the Lower Rhine Bay . To the west it borders on the Niers , which forms the border river to Mönchengladbach. The landscape is characterized by broken forest , floodplains, meadows and farmland . Despite the increasing settlement , Korschenbroich has retained its rural character in the districts. In the districts with the name ending -broich and also in the district of Kleinenbroich, which are characterized by the quarry landscape, the groundwater levels are very high.
The terrain surface in the urban area generally slopes in a northerly direction; in the south it is on average at around 60 m above sea level. NN in Rubbelrath (highest point: Quartzitkuppe Liedberg 80 m above sea level (see also in the section Landscape and nature reserves )), in the north, on the north channel , at around 37 m above sea level. NN. Along the south-north running Jüchener Bach, the Niers and the Trietbach as well as their tributaries, valley areas are formed, which in particular in the north of the urban area - on the Niers, the Trietbach and the north canal - expand to form wide lowlands, such as. B. at Niersbruch, Raderbroicher Busch (north of Raderboich) and Hoppbruch (south of Korschenbroich).
In the Korschenbroich urban area, around 68.1% of the total area is used for agriculture , 21.7% is accounted for by settlement , commercial and traffic areas , 7.2% for forest areas , 1.6% for recreational areas and 1.2% for water areas (status 1998).
Today the following five districts belong to Korschenbroich : Korschenbroich, Kleinenbroich , Glehn , Liedberg and Pesch . In some of these parts of the city there are other villages. These are Korschenbroich with Herzbroich , Herrenshoff, Neersbroich, Trietenbroich and Raderbroich ; Lüttenglehn , Epsendorf , Scherfhausen and Schlich in Glehn; Steinhausen , Drölsholz and Steinforth-Rubbelrath in Liedberg.

geology
The urban area is crossed by the northwest-southeast and west-northwest-east-southeast trending Viersener Sprung, which separates the Venloer and Kölner Scholle in the southern urban area from the Krefeld Scholle in the northern urban area. According to the examined sections, the Quaternary is no longer displaced by the disturbance . The oldest geologically relevant layers north of the Viersener jump are the deposits of the Oligocene . You are here predominantly as z. Sometimes silty fine sands (marine sands) are formed, which in the urban area are up to 100 meters thick. South of the Viersener jump, the Miocene sea sands with the embedded brown coal seams form the basis of the Quaternary. In the extreme southeast of the urban area, south of the fault, clays (Glehner clay) are present on the tertiary surface . The Pleistocene deposits of the lower middle terrace of the Rhine (Quaternary) follow in further layers . The terrace sediments are largely covered by a one to two meter thick layer of loess or loess clay.
The fracture tectonic subsidence of the Lower Rhine Bay continued in the Holocene to this day. 10% of tectonic movements take the form of earthquakes , roughly every four months with a magnitude of 2 on the Richter scale . The earthquake in Roermond , which occurred on April 13, 1992 with a magnitude of 5.9, was clearly noticeable in Korschenbroich. The epicenter of the quake was in the Dutch town of Linne, about 40 kilometers from Korschenbroich .
history
Prehistory and early history
Archaeological finds at the foot of the Liedberg in the urban area of Korschenbroich indicate tools from the early Paleolithic . Hand axes and blades certainly belong to the later Paleolithic Age. This site of equipment from the Neanderthal man , who lived around 100,000 years ago, is unique in the Rhine district of Neuss . The next evidence of human presence comes from the Middle Stone Age (9th – 5th centuries BC). Knives, scrapers and blades were found close to the Niers and Triet. They come from people who mainly acquired their food as hunters , fishermen and gatherers.
Roman time
Roman finds in the area of the former communities Korschenbroich and Pesch indicate early settlement of the region. In the field between Korschenbroich and Raderbroich , for example, a villa rustica was uncovered, in which the foundations and remains of the underfloor heating ( hypocausts ) were still present.
middle Ages
The Lords of Myllendonk were mentioned in the 12th century . At first it was a fiefdom of the dukes of Geldern and later passed to the dukes of Jülich as a fiefdom . The area of the Lords of Myllendonk was identical to the area of the later municipality of Korschenbroich.
Modern times
In 1700 the Myllendonk rule became imperial immediately. In 1794 Korschenbroich was occupied by the French and in 1815 the place came under the Kingdom of Prussia . In 1816, the municipality of Korschenbroich was formed with the villages of Korschenbroich, Trietenbroich, Neersbroich, Herrenshoff, Herzbroich, Raderbroich, Engbrück and inquiries hut. In 1929 she formed the Korschenbroich office in the Grevenbroich-Neuss district with the municipality of Pesch . The Korschenbroich office was dissolved on December 31, 1974.
Origin of name
The oldest known form of the name Korschenbroich comes from the year 1127 and is Crismeke , 1130 it is called Kirsemig, 1280 Kirsmec, 1341 in High German Kirsmich . This form of name was kept in different spellings over time until it was replaced by Korschenbroich .
It is believed that the names Crismeke and Cirsmich can be derived from the word cherry . The Roman general Lukullus (* 117 BC; † 56 BC) brought the cherry (Latin: cerasus ) from Asia Minor to Europe. Cirsmich could thus have the word meaning cherry field or cherry pulp.
language
In the middle of the urban area of Korschenbroich runs a language border, the Benrath Line . In the northern area (Korschenbroich, Kleinenbroich and Pesch) one speaks the East Limburg dialect of Southern Lower Franconia . South of the Benrath line (in Glehn and Liedberg), conversations are in Ripuarian , with a clear Cologne influence.
Contemporary history
In 1986 mayor Wilderich Freiherr von Mirbach Graf von Spee ( CDU ) resigned. In view of the empty city treasury, he had made the statement at a council meeting that "you have to kill a few rich Jews" to clean up the budget. The anti-Semitic incident was discussed nationwide.
Incorporations
On January 1, 1975, the Korschenbroich office was dissolved and the municipality of Pesch was incorporated, as well as the municipality of Liedberg with the villages of Steinhausen, Drölsholz, Steinforth and Rubbelrath and the municipality of Glehn with the villages of Lüttenglehn, Epsendorf, Scherfhausen and Schlich. The communities of Liedberg and Glehn had formed the Glehn office until December 31, 1974 . The Bickhausen estate came to the city of Grevenbroich .
In addition, the community of Kleinenbroich was incorporated, with the exception of Eschert, which has been part of the city of Willich since then . The municipality of Korschenbroich received the west side of Jahnstrasse in Steinhausen from the former town of Rheydt .
