Location and structure

Overtaking track and flyover of Landesstraße 382, 2013

The train station is in the north of the city center of Korschenbroich , accessible via Hindenburgstrasse. The S-Bahn line S 8 of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr stopping here and the bus lines make it a traffic hub for the Korschenbroich city and districts Raderbroich , Herrenshoff, Trietenbroich, Neersbroich and Pesch . The bus routes lead to Giesenkirchen , Rheydt , Wickrath and Mönchengladbach Hbf . The Herrenshoffer Strasse connects to the north and leads through a purely residential area. In the south there is a mixed development of commercial and residential; A large senior citizen center is currently being built in the immediate vicinity of the train station, in which a nursing home and assisted living are planned.

The train station is very well served by the state roads 381 and 382, which bring car traffic from the south and north. There are large P&R parking lots on both sides of the station , which are also used by passengers from the surrounding towns and communities.

For overhauls, the station has a siding on the regular track of Mönchengladbach Hbf to the west of the platforms. A train overhaul from Neuss Hbf can only be carried out when entering and leaving on the opposite track, as the siding is only connected to this.

history

Central platform before the renovation, 2013

The station was built in 1870 by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft as a station between Mönchengladbach and Kleinenbroich due to the traffic importance of Korschenbroich . The railway line from Mönchengladbach to Düsseldorf was opened in 1853. Initially, the Kleinenbroich station , which had a large loading platform and two goods stabling tracks, was responsible for Korschenbroich and Büttgen .

From the mid-1980s, the station was rebuilt in connection with the construction of the East-West S-Bahn (Mönchengladbach - Hagen). The central platform, which can be reached at the same height, and the main platform were removed and a new central platform was built. Instead of the 960 millimeters customary for S-Bahn trains, this had a platform height of 760 millimeters, so that trains that exceeded the loading gauge could continue to run on the route. The new platform was accessed via a pedestrian underpass with a staircase on both sides of the route. The Hindenburgstrasse / Herrenshoffer Strasse level crossing to the east was closed in 1987 and an overpass 200 meters further west was constructed as a replacement structure. The city bought the former station building in 1988 and used it as a community center and local history museum. On May 29, 1988, the Deutsche Bundesbahn took up the S-Bahn traffic.

In 2014, the station was extensively redesigned by Deutsche Bahn. The central platform originally built with the operation of the S-Bahn was demolished and replaced by two barrier-free outer platforms with a platform height of 760 millimeters. The area around the station was also made barrier-free by the city of Korschenbroich with a grant from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . For this purpose, the existing stairs were supplemented by pedestrian ramps.

There is no roofing on the platforms, but there are waiting houses. A further 100 covered bicycle parking spaces and 30 lockable bicycle boxes were also built.

Station building

Entrance building, 2014

It is a building from the 1880s that is now a listed building. The station building was erected as a brick building on the eaves in a classical style with a gently sloping gable roof and a wide roof overhang, with gables accompanied by wall templates. The building has two floors with three axes on the ground floor. The round-arched openings were given the same decoration that the first generation of reception buildings had received. The architectural style follows on from the design of the first generation type stations. The simple brick building was later given an enclosed, three-axis extension on one side, also with arched openings, which was later extended by two axes. The first extension included the passage to the platform, the last extension was intended for the station restaurant.

The building of the old Korschenbroich station is now home to the Korschenbroich cultural station , which is operated by the Heimatverein Korschenbroich eV and the Förderverein Alter Bahnhof Heimatmuseum eV . Temporary exhibitions and other cultural events such as concerts, lectures and readings take place here regularly in an appropriate setting. The museum of local history is located in the left part of the building of the culture station. There, the history of the town of Korschenbroich and the train station is presented in a permanent exhibition on three floors.

Monument description

The building was entered under no. 091 on December 18, 1986 in the list of architectural monuments in Korschenbroich .

The station building was used as eaves permanent brick building with corner pilaster strips and blocks Fries under the eaves provided. The flat, sloping gable roof with a wide roof overhang, dating from classicism , was accompanied by wall templates in the gables . The two floors have two axes on the upper floor and three on the ground floor . The round-arched openings were given the same decoration that the first generation of reception buildings had received. In doing so, the master builders took up the design of the first-generation type stations. The simple brick building was later given a single-sided, three-axis extension, also with arched openings, which was later extended by two axes. The first extension contains the passage to the platform and was therefore created in the period of the establishment of platform barriers in the 1890s. The last extension included the train station restaurant. Despite the different building eras, a largely uniform brick building was created.
