Railway stations in North Rhine-Westphalia |
The Gevelsberg West train station is located in the far west of the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Gevelsberg . The former crossing station has since ceased passenger traffic on the branches to Wuppertal-Wichlinghausen (1971, shutdown 2006) and Witten-Höhe (1979, shutdown 1983). Since 1988 it has only been served by the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn .
Gevelsberg West is the only remaining train station (within the meaning of the EBO ) with passenger traffic in Gevelsberg city area. All other S-Bahn stations, including the main train station , are operationally considered stops .
description
The station was put into operation in 1934 together with the Witten – Schwelm line as a transfer station to the Rhine line . Originally, the station also had two signal boxes , but they were dismantled in 1987. The former station building from 1929 has been preserved and has been a listed building since 1988.
The formerly extensive railway facilities now only consist of a central platform and three tracks, two of which are on the platform. Since this can only be reached via stairs, it is not barrier-free despite its edge height of 76 cm .
The flyover structure for the line to Witten at the east end of the station is still in place today (2020).
The train station is now located in an industrial area far from the city center and other popular destinations. Since it has also lost its initial function as a crossing station, it is rather unattractive in passenger transport compared to the other Gevelsberg S-Bahn stations. There is also no direct connection to the Ennepe-Ruhr bus network ; the next stop ( Frielinghausen ) has to be walked around 450 m.
