Railway stations in North Rhine-Westphalia |
In the Essen district of Dellwig there are the two stations Essen-Dellwig and Essen-Dellwig Ost . Both are at the intersection of two railway lines.
- Essen-Dellwig is the lower station. It is located at the Duisburg-Dortmund railway run by the regional rail lines operated RB 32 and RB 35th
- Essen-Dellwig Ost is the higher access point . It is located on the Mülheim-Heißen-Oberhausen-Osterfeld Nord railway line and at its transition to the Essen-Dellwig Ost – Bottrop Hbf connection and is served by the S9 line.
Location and structure
The Essen-Dellwig stop is located on the Duisburg-Dortmund and Mülheim-Heißen-Oberhausen-Osterfeld Nord railway lines in the Dellwig district . Strictly speaking, these are two different, separate operating points and not a tower station , as the platforms of the higher and lower ones are not directly connected by ramps or stairs. You can change between the platforms via a 350-meter-long footpath along Donnerstrasse. This is used by a tram line; However, there is no stop for Dellwig Ost. The footpath between the two Dellwig stations is not signposted.
The higher station therefore bears the name Essen-Dellwig Ost to distinguish it from the lower one . Historically, both stations were opened by different railway companies. Access to the Dellwig Ost station is via a ramp.
The Essen-Dellwig stop has two side platforms. The platform in the direction of Duisburg can only be reached via a pedestrian bridge, so it is not barrier-free; there are no steps in the opposite direction. There is a park-and-ride car park next to the reception building and signal box (EFri = Essen-Frintrop) . To the north of the Dellwig stop is the Ripshorster Strasse industrial park, which can be reached via a level crossing with full barriers to the west of it . This is remotely monitored by the Ohf signal box in Oberhausen Hbf .
history
Essen-Dellwig stop
With the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century, the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft built the first railway line in the Emschertal in 1847 . On October 1, 1885, the Frintrop marshalling yard was opened, which later developed into an important freight transport hub in the Ruhr area . This Frintrop station has been closed for passenger traffic since 1924.
Dellwig train station was opened on May 1, 1891 together with Dellwig's first own post station. After Dellwig became part of the city of Essen, it was renamed Essen-Dellwig between 1917 and 1925.
Until the timetable change on December 15, 2019, there was an hourly connection with the S-Bahn line S2 from Essen-Dellwig to Oberhausen and Duisburg as well as to Gelsenkirchen , Herne and Dortmund .
Essen-Dellwig Ost train station
In 1879 the crossing railway line Mülheim-Heißen-Oberhausen-Osterfeld Nord was put into operation. On May 1, 1921, the Essen-Dellwig Ost train station, which is now on the Essen Hauptbahnhof-Bottrop line , went into operation on this route . The choice of its location resulted from the proximity to the Essen-Dellwig train station as well as to the trams and the residential areas of Dellwig. It should be just as centrally located in the district as the station of the crossing railway line.
service
railroad
The Essen-Dellwig station is served by the regional train lines RB 32 and RB 35. The S9 runs from Dellwig Ost in the direction of Essen and Wuppertal , as well as to Bottrop . Every hour it goes beyond Bottrop Hbf via Marl to Haltern am See .
Bus and tram
The bus and tram stop Dellwig Bf is located between the two S-Bahn stops. The bus and tram lines operated by the Ruhrbahn run there:

Future prospects
Due to the unfavorable pedestrian routing between the two S-Bahn stops (the tram and bus stop located on an island has neither traffic lights nor zebra crossings that make it easier to change, the same applies to the transition between the two train stations) it will still not be easy to change . However, there are demands from local residents and politicians to merge the two stops into a tower station .
A feasibility study is currently considering expanding the S9 railway line between Dellwig Ost and Bottrop Hauptbahnhof to two tracks , in order to both extend the 20-minute intervals of the S9 to Gladbeck West and to reduce the high risk of the S9 being delayed. On this section, in addition to the S9 line, the hourly regional express line RE14 of the NordWestBahn runs from Essen via Bottrop, Gladbeck and Dorsten to Borken (without a stop in Essen-Dellwig Ost), which means that this single-track section makes four journeys per during rush hour Has hour and direction.
