The Essen-Kupferdreh stop is an S-Bahn station in the Kupferdreh district of Essen . It functioned as a train station until 2003 and in the 1970s replaced the old copper turn station , which is now only served by the Hespertalbahn .
History and character
The old station Kupferdreh is the predecessor of today's stop at the Kupferdreher Markt. In the 1970s, the local transport line N 9 was formed and the station moved to its current location.
In 1991 one of the first electronic interlockings (ESTW) went into operation in Essen-Kupferdreh . The SIMIS B type interlocking controlled three tracks of the Essen-Kupferdreh train station (other tracks were connected as key switches) and the upstream pedestrian stop, which was designed as part of the train station, and replaced three mechanical interlockings. Parts of the control technology of the signal box were relocated with the help of modems to the track plan signal box in Essen-Steele station several kilometers away and were also operated from there.
In 1998, the line was divided N 9: between Haltern am See and Eat the S was 9 and between Essen and Wuppertal RB 49th
In 2003 the line was electrified. For this purpose, the electronic interlocking was shut down in August and the Essen copper turning was dismantled to the stop. The control technology outsourced in Steele was retained and was restored to working order in 2010 in the museum of the signal box in Cologne-Dünnwald . After the work was completed, the RB 49 was replaced in December 2003 by the S 9 S-Bahn line, which has been continuously connecting Haltern and Wuppertal since then.
From 2010 to 2012, the railway line was raised in this area as part of a redesign of the Kupferdreher Center. The previous side platforms were replaced by a central platform. The approach ramps to the now higher stopping point have a slope of 35 ‰ in the direction of Wuppertal , because the A 44 crosses the route further south. The newly built stop at Kupferdreh offers space for a bike station on the market and, at the same time, more parking space for buses.
The Ruhrbahn built a large bus station at the stop for 5.8 million euros from September 2017 to June 2019 . The parking spaces under the motorway are to be used for both park and ride and car sharing . In addition, five bus platforms and a kiss-and-ride point have been set up alongside the stop .
In order to implement these plans, the stop had to be raised, because otherwise there would have been too little space for the large bus station. In June 2016, the city council passed the building decision. Work on the new bus station began on September 18, 2017.
On June 11, 2019, the new bus station at the Kupferdreh station went into operation.
service
Essen-Kupferdreh has been served by the RE 49 and S 9 lines since December 15, 2019 . From 2003 to December 14, 2019, the S 9 ran every 20 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends between Wuppertal via Essen to Bottrop and once an hour to Haltern am See. Since the timetable change on December 15, 2019, however, the S 9 has been running every 30 minutes and is extended to Hagen Hbf once an hour . At the Kupferdreh stop there are connections to the bus routes 141, 153, 155, 177, 180 and NE6 of the Ruhrbahn .
