Hamidiya or al-Hamidiyya ( Arabic الحميدية, DMG al-Ḥamīdīya ; Greek Αλ Χαμιντιά Al Chamintiá , Χαμιντιέ Chamintié or Χαμεντίγιε Chamentígie ) is a city on the Syrian coastline about three kilometers from the Lebanese border. It is located in the district of Tartus of the province of Tartus .
The town was built around 1897 on the direct orders of quickly Ottoman Sultans . Abdulhamid II founded to serve as a refuge for the Muslim Cretans to serve, often called Cretan Turks are called, although they Greek Muslims with Ottoman-Greek are a convert origin. They were forced to leave Crete when the island, which was part of the Ottoman Empire, became virtually independent in the Turkish-Greek War of 1897–98, and were resettled here and other coastal areas of the Levant and even Libya by Sultan Abdülhamid II . The city is home to over 8,000 people and the majority continue to speak Cretan Greek in their everyday lives. According to the Syrian Central Bureau of Statistics, Hamidiya had a total population of 7,404 at the 2004 census.
