Hobbie Rhododendron Park
The Rhododendron Park Hobbie is a 70 hectare private park founded in 1928 in Westerstede -Linswege / Petersfeld in the Lower Saxony district of Ammerland .
history
The park was founded by the farmer Dietrich Gerhard Hobbie (1899–1985), who was inspired to become a gardener after the First World War by Karl Foerster 's book “From the flower garden of the future” . The evergreen and richly blooming rhododendrons became his favorites. In the 1920s, he began collecting rhododendron game species and sowing them in the family forest under pine and oak trees. He visited famous English parks and breeders who owe their particular fame to the rhododendrons ( Exbury Gardens , Kew Gardens , Wisley and EJP Magor in Cornwall) and began to select the best types from among the wild forms and to breed floriferous and hardy ones Sorts.
His breeds include:
- Wild forms Rh. Wardii (Breslau, Ehrengold, Herzas and Linsweger Gold)
- Rh.Williamsianum (August Lamken, gardening director Rieger, Oldenburg, gardening director Glocker and city of Essen)
- Rh.Repens (Scarlet Wonder, Baden-Baden, Bad Eilsen)
- Rh.discolor (Admiral Vanessa and Rosa Traum)
- Insignia hybrids (Grugaperle, Hultshin)
- Yakushimanum hybrids (Flava, Love Song, Maifreude)

Hobbie has received several awards for his new breeds and the development of the park, including the Federal Cross of Merit .
