Mülheim (Ruhr) Hauptbahnhof is the most important traffic junction in Mülheim an der Ruhr in the western Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia . The station was given its current name in 1974 after the expansion of the railway line as part of the establishment of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn .

The former contact station is located in the fork between the Ruhr area lines of two of the largest former private railway companies, the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (RhE for short) and the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (BME for short).

history

In 1866, the RhE built the “Mülheim RhE” station on its Ruhr area route from Osterath to Dortmund RhE . Immediately to the north, adjacent to the existing train station, the BME set up its own stop "Mülheim-Eppinghofen BME" in 1867 on its own Ruhr area route from Witten or Dortmund to Oberhausen or Duisburg , which had existed since 1862 .

After the nationalization and merger of the two railway companies in the Prussian State Railways , the two neighboring stations were formally one, but structural changes or even a link between the two lines were not made at this point. The two routes ran parallel to each other to the (Mülheim-) Heißen train station, where they were then linked operationally.

On June 1, 1888, the station was renamed "Mülheim (Ruhr)" for the first time, and only four years later on August 11, 1892 it was renamed "Mülheim-Eppinghofen". In the years 1905 to 1910, the Eppinghofer train station was rebuilt with the underpass of Eppinghofer Straße in a shared building, now also recognizable for passengers between the tracks. The steep roof of the building was destroyed in World War II and not rebuilt.

The technically more important station in Mülheim was still the larger station " Mülheim (Ruhr) BME " (from 1892 "Mülheim (Ruhr)" and later until 1974 "Mülheim (Ruhr) Hauptbahnhof"), which was built further west by the BME but was not accepted by the Mülheim population because of the greater distance to the city center. The importance was based on the fact that in the steam locomotive era, the heavy and long express and express trains in front of the Heißener Berg needed a good run-up and sometimes also push assistance and therefore ran through Eppinghofen . The large station building located near the industrial facilities of the Friedrich Wilhelms-Hütte was demolished in 1975 and the station belonging to it is now called " Mülheim (Ruhr) West ".

With the electrification of the Cologne – Hamm line in the 1950s, the long-distance trains stopped at Eppinghof station, which was renamed “Mülheim (Ruhr) Stadt” on May 22, 1955 and received 1974 with the opening of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn the name "Mülheim (Ruhr) Hauptbahnhof", which is still valid today.

In 1992 a shuttle train service called MüGa Wiesel took place on the above-mentioned Osterath route to the then state garden show .

Todays situation

The Mülheim main train station today has a directional platform with two tracks on the former “Bergisch-Märkische Bahn”, so only four tracks in total, making it one of the smallest main train stations in the Ruhr area. The "Rheinische Bahn" line has been shut down, the overhead lines have been dismantled, as has a large part of the tracks. In addition, all sidings at the station exits and almost all switches were removed. Only a pair of switches between the long-distance line and the S-Bahn line in the west head in the eastern direction differentiate the station from a stop .

As a result of the renovation in 2010 and 2011, the main building was almost completely modernized, the pedestrian tunnel redesigned and the station forecourt renewed. 2.1 million euros were invested in the renovation of the main building.

In 2015 the platforms were renewed. Platform edges and floor coverings were renewed over a length of 370 meters. These were also equipped with a tactile guidance system for the visually impaired. Elevators are also available; the station is therefore barrier-free . Furthermore, the platform roofs were modernized, the existing furniture (showcases, seating, waste bins, etc.) was replaced and the lighting and the announcement technology were renewed. The total cost of these measures is 4.5 million euros.

The DB travel center was closed in November 2019; tickets are now sold in an office of the Ruhrbahn at the entrance to the forum .
