The Eilendorf stop is a stop in the Eilendorf district of Aachen on the Cologne – Aachen high-speed line between Stolberg main station and Aachen-Rothe Erde station .
Location and facilities
The Eilendorf stop is on the Cologne – Aachen high-speed line north of the Eilendorf town center. The district of Nirm borders to the north. The Eilendorfer Tunnel connects to the east of the stop . To the west, about 200 meters from the platforms, is the ASEAG Eilendorf Bahnhof bus stop .
The stop has two tracks, each of which is connected to a 125 m long side platform . Each platform has a bus shelter , a ticket machine and a single-line, digital passenger information system; Noise barriers have been installed on the northern platform . The platforms are under video surveillance. There are also lockable bicycle boxes behind both platforms.
There is a slope around the railway line. While the entrances, which are located in the middle of a platform, are at ground level, the route in the direction of Aachen runs above the surrounding level before the Eilendorf stop, but below the surrounding level after the Eilendorf stop. The tracks cannot be crossed at the breakpoint itself; a bridge to the west or an underpass to the east of the stop must be used for this.
From the eastern end of the platforms there is a view over the straight route to the Eilendorfer Tunnel and the Nirmer Tunnel.
In the report on station quality in SPNV 2019 by the local public transport association Rhineland , the stop achieved an overall result of 96.27% and thus the highest rating class “at least acceptable”.
history
On September 1, 1841, the railway line from Cologne to Aachen was opened by the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft . At this point in time there was already a stop in Eilendorf, the name of which was Nirm when it was commissioned and which was renamed in 1865. When a neighboring sawmill received a siding , the Eilendorf stop was upgraded to a train station.
In April 1897, a first, one-story station building was erected on the south side of the station. In the meantime, passenger traffic at the Eilendorf station had been stopped; In 1897 the resumption took place. Around 1920, the Deutsche Reichsbahn built a new, larger station building. At that time, in addition to the two main tracks, between which a central platform could be found, there was also a bypass track and a track for goods handling in Eilendorf . The latter was housed in the first station building from 1897.
The Eilendorf stop received its present form in the course of the electrification work on the Cologne-Aachen railway line, which took place from 1963 to 1966. Two side platforms took the place of the central platform; Except for the main tracks, all track systems were dismantled and the train station back to the stop. The station building was demolished by 1988.
In 2003, a stop on the regional express line RE 9 Rhein-Sieg-Express was set up in Eilendorf . Shortly afterwards, demands were made to stop the second regional express line , the RE 1 NRW-Express , in Eilendorf and thus establish a 30-minute cycle to Cologne . However, with the 2009 timetable change , the RE 9 stop in Eilendorf was discontinued.
In 2018, the platforms were raised from 38 cm to 76 cm in order to enable barrier-free access to the trains at ground level. The platforms that were previously more than 200 m long were shortened to 125 m.
traffic
The Eilendorf stop is served by trains of the Euregiobahn every half hour during the day . This offers direct connections to Aachen , Düren , Stolberg-Altstadt and Alsdorf . Trains in the direction of Cologne can be reached with a trip to Stolberg Hbf and there change to a regional express , with transfer times between 14 and 24 minutes. The travel time from Eilendorf to Rothe Erde is around three minutes and to Aachen main station around seven minutes. On weekday mornings and evenings, repeater trains to and from Cologne or Düsseldorf stop in Eilendorf .
The clocked trains of the regional express lines RE 1 and RE 9, the Intercity Express and the Thalys pass through the Eilendorf stop without a scheduled stop.
The Eilendorf stop is connected to the following public transport lines:
future
There were plans to convert the Eilendorf stop. There is no possibility of crossing the tracks in the form of a bridge or underpass in the area of the stop. Instead of the planned route over the neighboring bridge, passengers crossed the tracks without authorization, despite rapid train passages. A chain link fence set up between the two tracks and provided with prohibition signs to avoid this behavior had little effect due to its low height.
In 2013, the Aachener Verkehrsverbund , the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Rheinland , the Geographisches Institut der RWTH Aachen and DB Station & Service carried out a feasibility study that produced four possible variants. The first planning variant includes relocating the stop about 200 meters to the west, where stairs and elevators can be installed on an existing road bridge, similar to what is the case at the Aachen Schanz stop . Another possibility is to relocate the stop to the east and widen an existing underpass. The two remaining planning variants describe the renewal of the stop at the existing location with the simultaneous construction of a bridge or a pedestrian underpass. The possible stop of the Rhein-Ruhr-Express had to be taken into account in the planning.
The feasibility study comes to the conclusion that the variant “Brücke Hansmannstrasse” performs best in all aspects examined, including the forecast costs (EUR 3.0 million or EUR 4.1 million for the long variant). The variant provides for the construction of a new bridge over the railroad tracks at the end of Hansmannstrasse, with barrier-free access being guaranteed by elevators. A forecourt with service facilities is to be built at both ends of the bridge. On April 16, 2015, the city's mobility committee decided unanimously to continue planning this variant after the Eilendorf district council had voted in favor of it on March 4.
The planning of the reconstruction of the Eilendorf stop, a new Euregiobahn stop in Richterich and the redesign of the Aachen West train station with the participation of citizens was funded by the European Union as part of the Citizens' Rail project from May 2012 to September 2015 with 550,000 euros.
