Methler is a district of the city of Kamen in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Unna in Germany .

history

Margaret Church

Methler has been part of Kamen since January 1st, 1968 . A year earlier, on January 1, 1967, the neighboring parishes Westick and Wasserkurl were incorporated. For historical, but also more recent settlement-related reasons, Methler is often divided into the areas Methler Dorf (also Alt-Methler), Altenmethler, Kaiserau , Westick and Wasserkurl.

The first documented mention of the name Methler goes back to a deed of gift dated April 11, 898, in which possessions are transferred to the St. Gereonsstift in Cologne under the name Metlere .

The soil finds in Westick, a Germanic trading center with a high proportion of Roman finds, however, indicate a much older settlement in the Methler area. The finds from the archaeological site, which is also of national importance, are part of the collection of the House for City History in Kamen and the “Prehistory” section of the Gustav Lübcke Museum in Hamm.

village life

A locally important date in the event calendar is the plum fair , which traditionally takes place on September 17th and the next weekend. It ends with fireworks on Monday evening. The fair takes place in the historical center of the village around the Margaretenkirche .

Every year on Ascension Day , the “ Löschgruppe Methler” of the “ Kamen Volunteer Fire Brigade ” celebrates its festival with an open day at the fire station at the “Bunter Kuh”. Every year on the Saturday after Ascension Day, the “Dorfjungs Methler” organize their traditional tug of war at the same place. Several clubs from near and far come to this event. Every two years, always in the odd years, the Methler shooting club invites you to a shooting festival in late summer. From Friday to the so-called “village evening” on Monday, there is dance and music every evening in the large rifle tent at the community center.

Forest singing on Ascension Day by the men's choir in 1875, Wasserkurl under Meinberg's beeches in the village of Wasserkurl, also has a tradition going back over 75 years. Not only families from the village of Wasserkurl come to this event, but from all over the area.

Methler is also known for its distinctive club life. There are 72 registered associations in the Kamen district. The highest ranking sports club is the RV Wanderlust, a cycling club that plays in the second division.
