Uwe Kröger (born December 4, 1964 in Kamen-Methler ) is a German musical actor .

Career

Childhood and youth

Uwe Kröger grew up with his sister and a younger brother, who were seven years older than him, on a converted farm in Hamm . He attended the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium in Hamm with a focus on natural sciences. During school he sang in a so-called gospel choir, and in 1979 he and a friend founded the band Saitensprung. After graduating from high school, he worked as a community service provider in youth psychiatry . Kröger took part in a municipal cultural project as a singer in various musical revues. He originally planned to become an art therapist or an architect. However, when he sang the title Aquarius from Hair at an event in Hamm and received a great response, his life plans changed and he began to study singing , acting and dance at the University of the Arts Berlin (UDK) .

The years after graduation

Shortly before finishing his training, Kröger was the first German-born line-up for Rusty in Starlight Express in Bochum , and he also played the Flat Top. He then performed in Les Misérables at the Raimund Theater in Vienna . In 1990 he was seen in the role of Jesus and Anna in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Schwäbisch Hall open-air theater and was then brought to Amsterdam for the Dutch version of Les Misérables , where he also played the roles of Enjolras and Feuilly worked as an assistant director . Then Kröger went to Essen , where he took on the role of Ziggy in Starmania . Later he went to Regensburg , where he appeared again as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar . Then he went back to Vienna, where he played Frank N. Furter on The Rocky Horror Show . He also sang in the anniversary performance of Bernstein's Mass presented by Marcel Prawy .

His breakthrough came when he played "Death" with Pia Douwes and Viktor Gernot at the world premiere of the musical Elisabeth in the Theater an der Wien .

Kröger has also been active as an actor since the early 1990s, for example in the form of guest appearances in the series Polizeiruf 110 (1994) and Inspector Rex (1995).

In 1994 Kröger took on the male lead of GI Chris in the German-language premiere of Miss Saigon . In 1995, the unsuccessful screenwriter Joe Gillis played the leading role in the German-language premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard in Niedernhausen . In 1999 he played in the world premiere of Sylvester Levays and Michael Kunzes Mozart! in Vienna the role of Prince Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo . From October 2000 to February 2001 Kröger sang the role of Napoleon in the play of the same name, a European premiere in London's West End .

In 2001 and 2002 Kröger made successful forays into the operetta genre and could be seen at the Ronacher in Vienna as Felix in Beauberdes Fräulein by Ralph Benatzky . From September 2003 to December 2004 in Berlin he played the role of Inspector Javert in Les Misérables at the Theater des Westens , and then that of Cardinal Richelieu in the German premiere of 3 Musketeers .

In 2004, Kröger dubbed the title role in the film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera alongside Jana Werner .

In 2006 he sang the leading male role Maxim de Winter in Levay's and Kunze's musical Rebecca , which was premiered in the Raimund Theater in Vienna based on Daphne du Maurier's novel Rebecca , and took on the role of Erik in The Phantom of the Opera in Essen's Colosseum Theater now also in the musical version.

In the Viennese version of the musical Rudolf - Affaire Mayerling , which premiered on February 26th, 2009 in the Raimund Theater, Kröger played the role of Prime Minister Eduard Graf Taaffe .

At the end of 2009 Kröger's first solo DVD entitled Absolut Uwe was created in the Wiener Stadthalle . A tour through Austria and Germany followed with the same program in 2010 .

In spring 2016 it was announced that Kröger would play the role of Dr. Gudden would take over in the musical Ludwig² in Ludwigs Festspielhaus ( Füssen ), which he still plays today.

In addition to continuing his engagement in The Popess , Kröger made his debut at the Zwingenberg Castle Festival in 2019 as Merlin in Artus - Excalibur . In October he made his directorial debut with Monty Python's Spamalot at Theater Hof . From the end of the year he will again embody the Phantom of the Opera - in the Sasson / Sautter version.

Private

Until 2015 Kröger lived in Vienna and Darmstadt, among others .

From 1996 to 2015 he was in a relationship with the cardiologist Christopher Wolf.

In 2009, due to a dispute, Kröger separated from his long-time manager Marika Lichter , with whom he had also been a private friend for twenty years.

He has been living in Barcelona with his Spanish partner since 2015 .

On July 28, 2016, insolvency proceedings were opened against Kröger's assets, and he has been debt-free since the beginning of 2019.

Awards

At the 1997 Opera Ball , Kröger was named “Best Young Actor” of 1996 by the magazine Die Bühne , and in 2000 he received the audience award for “Best Musical Actor” from the same magazine. In 1997 he was honored with the first "IMAGE Award" from Germany's musical friends as best musical performer for his interpretation of Gillis in Sunset Boulevard . In 1998 he was named "Artist of the Year 1998" by the Golden Artist Magazine in the category musical performers. He has already won the title of “Germany's Musical Star No. 1” 13 times from the specialist magazine Musicals , and in 2001 he was also the best national and international actor (Napoleon / Elisabeth). He also won Da Capo elections for “most beautiful male voice” and “best male actor”.

On May 22, 2015, Kröger received the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria from Chancellery Minister Josef Ostermayer .

At the Austrian Music Theater Prize 2015 he was awarded the "Krone Musical Prize".
