action

first act

Annie is an 11 year old orphan (her birthday is October 28, 1922 and the story begins in 1933) who lived in New York during the Great Depression. The play begins on a December night when an orphan named Molly wakes up, frightened by a dream about her parents. Annie shows the girl a note in a heart-shaped locket that promises her parents will pick her up one day.

A short time later, Annie believes that her parents will not come to her and decides to flee the orphanage to look for her. But this attempt is foiled by Miss Hannigan, the cruel orphanage director. The children are forced to clean up the orphanage so late at night. Annie uses this to flee in the laundry basket of the laundry man Bundles McClocksey.

During her escape, Annie meets a dog named Sandy and runs into a group of people in a Hooverville . But as a result of a robbery, Annie loses track of Sandys and is brought back to the orphanage by the police. Grace Farrell, secretary to billionaire Oliver Warbucks, arrives just minutes after arriving there. Warbucks would like an orphan to spend the Christmas holidays at their home (reasons for adoption vary from inheritance to public relations). Annie is chosen by Grace.

The staff at Warbucks' mansion give Annie a warm welcome. Warbucks, on the other hand, is a bit hesitant at first. The two strengthen their bond through various smaller excursions. Warbucks soon decides to adopt Annie. Miss Hannigan is visibly upset about this. With the help of their brother Rooster and his friend Lily St. Regis, the three of them work out a plan to get rich through Annie.

Warbucks buys Annie a new heart-shaped locket to ask for consent to adopt. But the girl struggles when he tries to take the old locket from her. So he realizes that Annie still wants to find her parents and vows to help her.

Second act

Warbucks and Annie appear on the radio and run a public search for Annie's parents. Warbucks is offering the real parents $ 50,000. The radio broadcast is heard by the orphans and Miss Hannigan. Rooster and Lily plan to play Annie's parents, with Miss Hannigan's knowledge of the second half of the medallion, take the money and leave town.

Warbucks and Annie inspire President Roosevelt and his cabinet to New Deal reforms during a visit to the White House . A letter from the FBI indicates that it will be impossible to identify Annie's parents through the locket. Over a thousand alleged parents were exposed as liars. Therefore, Annie agrees to her adoption.

At a party for Annie's adoption, Rooster and Lily appear as Ralph and Shirley Mudge, pretending to be Annie's parents. Because the couple has a fake birth certificate and the other half of the locket, Warbucks accepts them as Annie's parents. He invites the couple to take Annie with them the next day, Christmas Day.

Warbucks and the surprised Annie are saddened by this change. But the FBI news comes quickly - Annie's real parents, David and Margaret Bennett, have died. Lily, Rooster and their accomplice Hannigan are arrested. The play ends with the adoption of Annie by Warbucks and the reunion of Sandy and Annie.
