Annie is a 2014 American fiction film directed by Will Gluck . The musical film was produced by Village Roadshow Pictures and Will Smiths Overbrook Entertainment for Sony Pictures' Columbia Pictures . The main characters in this adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name from 1977 are Quvenzhané Wallis , Jamie Foxx , Rose Byrne , Bobby Cannavale and Cameron Diaz . After Columbia's 1982 feature film , the 1995 television film Annie, and Disney's 1999 television film, this is the fourth film adaptation to begin production in 2013.

The film is based on the musical Annie by Charles Strouse (music), Martin Charnin (text), Thomas Meehan (book) and the comic strip Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray . The film premiere took place on December 7, 2014 in the Ziegfeld Theater . After its US theatrical release on December 19, 2014, the film received rather negative reviews, but became a box office hit that grossed more than $ 133 million internationally.

action

Annie Bennett lives with a few other girls in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, under the care of bitter former singer Colleen Hannigan, who spends her time drinking and finding a husband. Annie spends her Fridays waiting for her parents in front of Domoni’s restaurant when a message written on a Domoni's bill says they will be returning. During an inspection of Hannigan's handling of the girls by an inspector from the youth welfare office, Annie seizes the opportunity and manages to copy her social security number from his clipboard. Annie's quest to learn more about herself through this number ends with no further information available.

While trying to save a Shiba Inu from juvenile bullying, Annie is almost run over. She is saved by William Stacks, a mysophobic cell phone mogul who is running for the post of mayor. When Annie's rescue goes viral on the internet and Stacks' popularity grows, Stacks campaign manager Guy Danlily advises Annie to move in on Stacks to increase its popularity. Annie enjoys the new environment and becomes friends with Stack's assistant Grace Farrell. Annie is also allowed to adopt the previously rescued stray dog and names him Sandy . As they grow closer, Stacks reveals to Annie that he started his humble beginnings in Queens. Because of his father's working hours, he never really got to know him, but believed he could understand him if he worked just as hard. Annie helps Grace and Stacks realize that they also like each other on a romantic level.

At Annie's request, Stacks takes her and her friends from Hannigan's foster home to the premiere of MoonQuake Lake . At first, Stacks is not interested in the movie, but soon becomes a huge fan, as does Grace. Due to Annie and Grace's persistence, Stacks attends the after-movie party. After dropping off her friends at home, Annie shows Grace her Friday routine, waiting for her parents to return. Grace has compassion for her and promises to keep this secret from Stacks. In Hannigan's apartment, the returned girls unintentionally wake them up. Hannigan scolds them and tells them, remembering their own past, that rich people are not nice and will dump anyone they no longer like. A little hungover, she complains about her situation with foster children and her desire to regain fame.

When Annie is asked to read a speech at a charity event, she runs away. Although she is ten years old and goes to school, she cannot read. Stacks decides to hire a special educator for her, but Guy decides that Annie will only hinder Stacks' campaign after his popularity stops improving. Teaming up with Hannigan, Guy plans to hire scammers to claim that Annie is their daughter. In this way, Stacks' popularity should increase until the election is won. Guy would then split his pay with Hannigan. However, Guy plans to drop Annie back into the system once the elections are over, as he is not concerned about her welfare. By the time Hannigan reconsiders, Annie has already been kidnapped by the scammers. Hannigan tells Stacks about the plan, and Guy is fired. Stacks, Grace, Hannigan and the girls board the Stacks helicopter. With the support of the police, they followed the getaway car into the park. Annie is upset because she thinks Stacks would have arranged everything (since the kidnappers themselves believe that it was Stacks, not Guy) that paid her. Annie refuses to believe him when he says he knew nothing about the intrigue. Stacks wants to prove his innocence by telling the press that he is giving up the race for mayor. Annie then helps Grace and Stacks to confess their love for one another. All three happily dance and sing together.

Annie later announced the opening of the Stacks Youth Education Facility, a facility designed to help children who cannot read like they themselves can. Everyone is singing Annie's Tomorrow - Hannigan continues singing alone after the song ends, until the stares of the others make her stop.

production

Sony first announced the remake in January 2011; Jay-Z and Will Smith served as producers and Smith's daughter Willow would star in the film. In February 2011, a request was made that Ryan Murphy , the co-creator of Glee , should direct the film, but in March he declined the offer.

When looking for a screenwriter, actress Emma Thompson was initially considered. Further development did not take place until May 2012, when Will Smith appeared on the TV show Good Morning America and announced that the film would be set in what is now New York City , that Thompson would provide the script and that Jay-Z would also be new would provide written songs for the film. In July 2012, the screenwriter wrote of We Bought a Zoo , Aline Brosh McKenna , a second draft of the script. The start of production for spring 2013 was announced in August.

In January 2013, Will Gluck , director of the film Easy to Have , was hired to direct, but Willow Smith was no longer considered for the film.

Cast

In February 2013 it was announced that Quvenzhané Wallis , star of the film Beasts of the Southern Wild , for which she was also Oscar-nominated, would play the lead role in place of Willow Smith and that the film's release was planned for the 2014 Christmas season.

In March 2013 the search for the remaining contributors continued, rumor has it that Justin Timberlake was considered for the role of Daddy Warbucks. That turned out to be wrong when Jamie Foxx signed up for the role now named Will Stacks. After Sandra Bullock declined, the role of Miss Hannigan was cast by Cameron Diaz in June 2013 .

In July 2013, Rose Byrne joined the cast as Grace Farrell, Stack's loyal assistant, and in August, Bobby Cannavale , known from the Boardwalk Empire series and Rose Byrne's partner, joined the cast as Will Stack's staunch political advisor. In September the remaining contributors were announced: Amanda Troya, Nicolette Pierini, Eden Duncan-Smith, and Zoe Colletti as Annie's foster sisters.

Filming began on September 19, 2013, and the film was filmed at Grumman Studios . Other scenes were filmed in the new Four World Trade Center .

Differences from previous adaptations

According to Gluck, the story of the 2014 film adaptation has the same roots as the Broadway musical from 1977, yet the modern interpretation differs in a few ways from the original: The location was from the 1930s - the era of Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency and the Great Depression - moved to today's New York City. The opening scene in the school shows a class presentation by the "new Annie" as well as by a student who represents her classic appearance, with aspects and parallels between the economic situations of the two environments, such as the " New Deal " and the modern Lower class, discuss.

The role of Oliver Warbucks was changed to create the character of William Stacks, a technology entrepreneur (specifically in the cellular industry) who is running for Mayor of New York City. In addition, Annie no longer lives in an orphanage , but is in a foster relationship . Miss Hannigan's former film name Agatha has been changed to Colleen. Hannigan is complicit in the deception of Stacks and Annie (a conspiracy with Stack's campaign leader Guy Danlily) that Annie's supposed birth parents were found, but the accomplices were not embodied by Hannigan's brother Rooster and his girlfriend Lily, as in the original. Instead, Guy lets 'people for this type of work' take Annie with them. Hannigan's character has also been depicted more gently than in the earlier appearances, so she feels guilty for her actions in breaking Stacks and Annie and at the end of the film even helps to save Annie from her false parents. Annie the dog Sandy is a bitch in this film, in contrast to previous adaptations where the dog is a male. Annie is African-American, previously light skin and red hair.

Film music

The film includes popular songs from the original Broadway production, written by composer Charles Strouse and lyricist Martin Charnin , but these have been rearranged by Sia and Greg Kurstin to accommodate the new contemporary version. Musical director Matt Sullivan stated that the aim was to make the use of music in the film "seamless" rather than "abrupt", while maintaining the integrity and notoriety of the musical's cult songs such as "Tomorrow" and "It's the Hard Knock Life" should stay. The songs have been rearranged in a percussive, pop-inspired style. In particular, “It's the Hard Knock Life” has been renewed in a hip-hop style, while the use of “natural” sounds for the rhythm has been retained. The lyrics of some songs have also been updated to reflect the differences in the plot and version of the film. Sia and Kurstin wrote three new songs for the soundtrack: "Opportunity", "Who Am I" and "Moonquake Lake". Sia also wrote the song "The City's Yours" with the Norwegian music production and songwriting team Stargate .

  1. "Maybe" - Annie and the Foster girls
  2. "It's the Hard Knock Life" - Annie and the Foster girls
  3. "Tomorrow" - Annie
  4. "I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here" - Annie, Grace and Mrs. Kovacevic
  5. "Little Girls" - Miss Hannigan
  6. "The City's Yours" - Will and Annie
  7. "Opportunity" - Annie
  8. "Easy Street" - Guy and Miss Hannigan
  9. "Wer bin ich? “- Miss Hannigan, Will and Annie
  10. "I Don't Need Anything But You" - Will, Annie and Grace
  11. "Tomorrow / Together at last" - Company
  12. "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile" - Sia

Trivia

In addition to the supporting actors already mentioned, other well-known actors and singers also had cameo appearances in the film:

premiere

The official premiere of the film took place at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City on December 7, 2014.

piracy

Annie was one of the films that was leaked on November 27, 2014 by the Guardians of Peace, a group which the FBI claims to be linked to North Korea , after violating Columbia Pictures' parent company Sony Pictures Entertainment . In the first three days, Annie was downloaded from an estimated 206,000 unique IP addresses. By December 9, that number had grown to over 316,000 IP addresses. BoxOffice.com's chief analyst predicted that the leak would not affect Annie's box office success , as the piracy user group does not overlap with the target audience for the film.

distribution

Annie was released in the United States as a DVD and Blu-ray / DVD combo pack on March 17, 2015.

reception

Financial success

Annie launched in theaters on December 19, 2014, grossing $ 5,289,149 on day one. On the first weekend, the film grossed $ 15,861,939, placing it third in the US box office behind the newly released films The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and Night at the Museum: The Mysterious Tomb . The film grossed $ 85.9 million in North America and $ 48.7 million abroad, for a total worldwide revenue of $ 134.6 million.

In the United States

Annie has received mostly negative reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes , the film received a positive rating of 27% (based on 143 reviews) with an average rating of 4.5 / 10. The unanimous opinion of the website is: "The new-looking Annie suggests a progressive interpretation of a worn-out story, but suffocates a sympathetic cast with clichés, obnoxious cuteness and tasteless materialism." On Metacritic , the film has a rating of 33 out of 100 points on 38 ratings, which indicate "generally unfavorable reviews". Viewers surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A-" on a scale from A + to F.

PopMatters magazine rated Annie three out of ten and ruled: “The party scene embodies Annie in her uncomfortably choreographed high: She tries hard to be and not like the previous Annies, she hardly tries to be innovative or in any way inspired to be. She's as rough as Miss Hannigan and as greedy as Stacks, at least until they learn her lessons. The film doesn't seem to be learning. ”Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune gave Annie a star and a half, described the adaptation as“ shaky ”and“ unsatisfactory ”, criticized the commercialized nature of the plot changes, and concluded that it was“ without finesse and in terms of the simple joys of performance that we look for in any musical anytime, dangerously weak ”. Ben Sachs of the Chicago Reader gave the film three out of four stars and praised "the amazing amount of bite: The filmmakers acknowledge the similarities between the time of the Great Depression and the present and the populist message, however exaggerated, reveals always honest. "Sachs also praised director Will Gluck for striking a lively tone that is closer to classic Hollywood musicals than to contemporary children's entertainment."

The soundtrack, rearranged by Sia and Greg Kurstin, received polarizing reactions from the critics, with most of the criticism relating to the increased use of auto-tune . Entertainment Weekly described the soundtrack as an auto-tune disaster and promises that "you will never hear a worse rendition of 'Easy Street' than that given by Diaz and Cannivale". David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter says, "Almost all of the existing songs were shredded, often keeping only one or two characteristic lines and drowning them in desperately funky polyrhythmic sounds, acoustically aggressive arrangements and stupid new lyrics." Matt Zoller Seitz, however, spoke for the new ones Songs on the soundtrack.

On the other hand, the acting performances were received rather positively by some critics. IGN.com praised Wallis and Foxx for being "impeccable" for much of the film, as did Rose Byrne, who was described as the "surprise" of the film. Matt Zoller Seitz called Wallis "the first Annie to bring something new to the role, both culturally and personally," and praised the rest of the cast including Foxx and Byrne. Cameron Diaz's performance, however, received polarizing reviews, with the critics praising her efforts, but ultimately calling her too "provocative" as well as "shrill and obnoxious". Peter Travers of Rolling Stone said that she "plays exaggerated the role to hysteria."

In the German-speaking area

In the German-speaking area, too, the reviews were rather mediocre. The résumé on Film.at read: “Although not all elements of the template were implemented happily in this version […], 'Annie' is a lovable, contemporary musical remake with a great child-like leading actress.” Peter Osteried also went to the cinema. de awards partial sympathy points to the Annie remake: “Modernization or not, these are all just cosmetic corrections, in essence the well-known but popular story is told in a brisk and likeable way. You just can't have anything against a good portion of Schwulst, because there is plenty of it here. "On kino.de , the indifferent position of the production with regard to the musical aspect is mentioned:" ' Annie' is a warming musical fairy tale for the winter time the reluctance to be perceived as a musical, shown in marketing, was not necessary. "

Sidney Schering, in her review of Annie on Oddsmeter.de, countered some positive aspects of the film with at least as many negative points. She even poses the question of who the film's actual target group is: “Maybe for people who are lukewarm about musicals. They get a sweet, unimportant comedy with some memorable sayings - which now and then turns into a half-hearted musical. ”The German dubbed version in particular, in which both the dialogue and the vocal parts were translated, also has ups and downs : "The localization of the musical numbers by the songwriters Christine Roche, Klaus-Rüdiger Paulus, Thomas Amper is largely adequate and appropriate, just the translation of 'It's a Hard Knock Life' to 'Our life is full of crass' causes slight stomach ache." “The Voice Kids” participant Chelsea Fontenel from Switzerland was praised for her dubbing by Quvenzhané Wallis, while Manuel Straub was criticized as the singing voice of Jamie Foxx for the fact that his timbre did not match Foxx. Also Cinema .com warns of the German dubbed against "that the vocals - friendly formulated - only partially lip-sync are".
